I keep seeing the artichokes on the shelf at work... and i keep being tempted to try them, because i never have. ...but i don't because i'm very worried that i'll dislike them and then i would have thrown away two bucks. Yay! The Amazing Story of ECMajor and the Artichokes. The fact that you like all veggies except them... is a bad omen concerning my relationship with the artichokes.

They taste fine. If you don't object to, say, asparagus or eggplant, you probably won't mind the taste. What I said is they aren't worth the bother. Preparing them is fiddly, eating them is messy, and you don't get a lot out of one really. I don't object to them as offered in some restaurants, where they are turned into a dip for an appetizer or served as "artichoke hearts". But they still seem like a lot of bother for too little result.

Some exotic fruits are similar. Starfruit just doesn't have much taste, in my opinion. Cherimoya tastes OK, but picking out all the seeds and getting that horny skin off is too much trouble. Prickly pear ditto, plus it's slimy and way too sweet. ;)

See below. They do taste okay. But preparing them is just too much bother for what you get. And the traditional way of serving them is so loaded with butter that it's neither healthy nor economical. ;p

Not British slang, nah. "Paff-paff" is like "poit-poit", I suppose - inherently amusing to the dirty-minded. Or maybe that's just me. Oh, just ignore me. :)

Hmm. OK, I guess. A couple of Brit friends have taken great RP amusement out of the paff-paff thing, referring to my feet as "paffers" and such. You suddenly had me worried that I'd fallen into a trap without knowing.

After a year of onomatapoetic paffing, I'd feel really stupid if that were the case. But certainly innocent, as befits the role. ;D

I think not, in the context. So I will continue to assume that they take the same amusement in my made up words as I do. :D

The dictionary reference was amusing. It misses a third meaning, American, referring to poofy pillows (fluffy, fluffed up) presumably because they go poof (onomatapoeia) when you sit on them or lean on them. By extension, applied to bean-bag style furniture popular in the 70s, so that those large, lumpy bag "chairs" were referred to as poofs.

Also amusing, the google ads on that page came from IKEA. Now what does IKEA have to do with "poof", that's what I want to know.

I've never gotten a dirty connotation off 'paff' ... I think of it as kind of a soft bounce, like a soft, blunt leather end coming down on a hard floor.

Well, we use "puffed up" or more usually "fluffed up" for pillows, so "poofed up" may be from that direction instead. (Or possibly from "pouffe", a loanword from French that refers to a very cushioned footstool.)

I'm confident that puff and poof are the same word, arriving via different routes from a common source (probably French.) And the connotation of "effeminate male" for "poof" shows that. Such men are sometimes called "cream puffs" over here.

Actually it's pretty much brown at the moment, between the fallen leaves and the ravages of December. We're having a heatwave though. December was far colder than average, and January is running far warmer. Nearly 50 degrees and sunny (yay, sun!) today. But on the radio they said last year this day we set a record high of 65 degrees. The weather is definitely going weird.

I love my inflatable Pegasus, yes. Even when he brags too much about his nice ass. The kinky thing in the previous posting was from a quiz, and I didn't write the quiz, so it had nothing about plushies or inflates or even pegasi. I suppose I might have scored higher if it did have. XD
