They taste fine. If you don't object to, say, asparagus or eggplant, you probably won't mind the taste. What I said is they aren't worth the bother. Preparing them is fiddly, eating them is messy, and you don't get a lot out of one really. I don't object to them as offered in some restaurants, where they are turned into a dip for an appetizer or served as "artichoke hearts". But they still seem like a lot of bother for too little result.

Some exotic fruits are similar. Starfruit just doesn't have much taste, in my opinion. Cherimoya tastes OK, but picking out all the seeds and getting that horny skin off is too much trouble. Prickly pear ditto, plus it's slimy and way too sweet. ;)

Versus you, furry and way too sweet. :p

(or me, rancid and way too bitter ...)

I dunno about the rancid part, but yeah, someone ought to leach some of the bitterness and cynicism out of you.

After all that work the world's done to purify it so much within me?

Blame not the world alone. It's a cooperative process. ;)

I'm just at the end of The Last Unicorn, BTW. A very pleasurable version. It had been so long that I'd forgotten quite a bit, especially the ending parts. Gary will be listening to it next, so we both thank you for the gift.

Aww. Am I *that* saccharine? Sorry.

[identity profile] hellmutt.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, you're clip-cloppy. *nods wisely*

[identity profile] altivo.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Actually I'm more plush toy than real horse, so instead of clip-clop I often go paff-paff. ;P

[identity profile] hellmutt.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
*snicker* And with sound effects like that, people still wonder if you're blushing and virginal?
ext_39907: The Clydesdale Librarian (rocking horse)

[identity profile] altivo.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Either there's some British slang in this that I'm missing, or I'm just dense. How would you describe the sound of a plush covered foot hitting a hard surface?

Blushing, yes. Virginal? Not really.

[identity profile] hellmutt.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not British slang, nah. "Paff-paff" is like "poit-poit", I suppose - inherently amusing to the dirty-minded. Or maybe that's just me. Oh, just ignore me. :)
ext_39907: The Clydesdale Librarian (plushie)

[identity profile] altivo.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. OK, I guess. A couple of Brit friends have taken great RP amusement out of the paff-paff thing, referring to my feet as "paffers" and such. You suddenly had me worried that I'd fallen into a trap without knowing.

After a year of onomatapoetic paffing, I'd feel really stupid if that were the case. But certainly innocent, as befits the role. ;D

[identity profile] hellmutt.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Now you mention it, I suppose you could stretch it a little to sound like "poof". I have absolutely no idea if that's what they're thinking, though.
ext_39907: The Clydesdale Librarian (plushie)

[identity profile] altivo.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think not, in the context. So I will continue to assume that they take the same amusement in my made up words as I do. :D

The dictionary reference was amusing. It misses a third meaning, American, referring to poofy pillows (fluffy, fluffed up) presumably because they go poof (onomatapoeia) when you sit on them or lean on them. By extension, applied to bean-bag style furniture popular in the 70s, so that those large, lumpy bag "chairs" were referred to as poofs.

Also amusing, the google ads on that page came from IKEA. Now what does IKEA have to do with "poof", that's what I want to know.

[identity profile] chibiabos.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've never gotten a dirty connotation off 'paff' ... I think of it as kind of a soft bounce, like a soft, blunt leather end coming down on a hard floor.

You apparantly have friends even dirtier-minded than I. Isn't that shocking?

[identity profile] altivo.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You got it right, but you're American. I think Locandez has it right too, but [livejournal.com profile] hellmutt had me worried for a minute there.

[identity profile] hellmutt.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I knew what 'Tivo meant, but onomatopoeia tends to strike me that way. Never, ever, EVER say "fwap" to me. :)

[identity profile] hellmutt.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we use "puffed up" or more usually "fluffed up" for pillows, so "poofed up" may be from that direction instead. (Or possibly from "pouffe", a loanword from French that refers to a very cushioned footstool.)

[identity profile] altivo.livejournal.com 2006-01-11 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm confident that puff and poof are the same word, arriving via different routes from a common source (probably French.) And the connotation of "effeminate male" for "poof" shows that. Such men are sometimes called "cream puffs" over here.

Here is a collection of paffers:

Yep, I remember the tale of the huge one. They're pretty, if slightly surreal all piled together with the different scales.
