Too busy Monday
Jun. 29th, 2009 08:57 pmThis was as bad as a Wednesday, except that it ended at five. Short handed this morning, and trying to convince tech staff that I couldn't spend an hour on the phone with a software provider trying to debug something when there were only two of us to answer phones, cover the desks, and deal with the Monday rush of kids coming to claim their summer reading loot. At least tomorrow is the last day to register, after which we can't take any more sign ups.
Went out for dinner with Gary to celebrate our 27th year together. And now I get to hurry the spinners' newsletter together if I can so it goes out early this month.
Photos of the Petersen Farm event yesterday are here. My elbow is in one of them (#46) and I'm a blur in the background of another (#17.) ;p
More photos here (big bandwidth!)

Date: 2009-06-30 04:14 pm (UTC)Yep, those are modern spinning wheels. The two on the right are made in Canada, the one on the left is made in Colorado, USA. Mine was at my feet there, but out of the picture, and it was made in New Zealand. I was spinning with a wooden hand spindle when that picture was taken. You get a longer spin if you stand up.

Date: 2009-07-01 06:18 pm (UTC)At least in historic times, the making of clothing has not been restricted to women alone in most cultures. Men were involved as far back as Ancient Egypt, for instance. Men did great quantities of knitting even in Medieval and Renaissance England, and weaving has often been a trade more controlled by men than women in much of Europe.
We tend to have bad social assumptions about these things, often as projections of what we see in our own era and geographic location, like that guy who acted so shocked to see me "knitting" on Sunday. Now I'm curious about the assumptions made by this author.
As far as spinning on horseback, I'd not heard of that. Knitting on horseback, however, yes.
