altivo: Geekish ham radio pony (radio)
The firewall (new one) appears to be functional. Went in to work this afternoon and swapped it in to test it. Miraculously, I could find no problem with the configuration. I tried all the ports that are supposed to be open and they all worked. Tried a couple that are closed and they were closed. It was logging lots of outside attempts to break into Windows file sharing as usual. Most importantly, it made the VPN connection to the Cisco router over at the library consortium HQ without a hitch, unlike the nightmare I had getting the old one to do that. So, it stayed in and the old one is now unplugged. Security support for the old one was due to run out on April 3.

Snow last night was very wet and sticky. It was real pretty this morning, one of those scenes with every twig and branch fuzzed up with white. The temperature shot right up above freezing though, so soon there were big wet handfuls of snow falling out of the trees and trying to go down your neck. By the time I left to go to work for the testing mentioned above, roads were all dry and the sky was clear and bright. At sunset, there were big bare patches in the grass, where there had been three inches of snow cover this morning. That's fast melting.

Once the firewall was in and I was running around testing, I let my own workstation download three CDs full of public domain/open source stuff for the Alpha. Turns out that Perl, PHP, Apache, and MySQL are all ported to OpenVMS and ready to install. Also Samba. And I need a music player, since the one provided dates to the DEC era and doesn't work with the hardware even in my DEC-era machine.

Bed soon, I'm tired as if I'd actually done real work today.
