Finished Stole

Here is the finished piece that I've mentioned a few times. The technique is neither knitting nor crochet, but something much older. Nålbinding is done with short (2-3 yds.) lengths of woolen yarn and a tapestry needle. You construct interlinking loops and fingerwoven braids rather like the Celtic knot in art. The yarn has to be spliced frequently because you can't handle more than three yards or so without getting tangled.

The technique was traditionally used in Russia and Scandinavia to make heavy winter garments such as socks, mittens, and caps, but by not pulling the loops down firmly I was able to make lace instead. This large scarf is the result. Light and airy, but still warm and soft. I'm quite happy with the final product.

From many friends:
  • If you like, post this meme and your current wallpaper.
  • Explain in no more than five sentences why you're using that wallpaper!
  • Don't change your wallpaper before doing this! The point is to see what you had on!
Obviously, this is a still shot from the Dreamworks film, Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. It was one of several that they gave away on the web during the pre-release publicity for the film. It's one of my all time fave animated films. It has a horse, it has wings, should be obvious. XD
