Finished Stole

Here is the finished piece that I've mentioned a few times. The technique is neither knitting nor crochet, but something much older. Nålbinding is done with short (2-3 yds.) lengths of woolen yarn and a tapestry needle. You construct interlinking loops and fingerwoven braids rather like the Celtic knot in art. The yarn has to be spliced frequently because you can't handle more than three yards or so without getting tangled.

The technique was traditionally used in Russia and Scandinavia to make heavy winter garments such as socks, mittens, and caps, but by not pulling the loops down firmly I was able to make lace instead. This large scarf is the result. Light and airy, but still warm and soft. I'm quite happy with the final product.

Thanks. The mistakes are not obvious at least. Unfortunately, a photo gives no sense of the lightness of this piece. It has about six ounces of wool in it, but feels like air. I intend to play around with nålbinding some more, for sure.
