Gary took his GRE this afternoon, so he can quit fidgeting about it. Maybe he'll sleep tonight. His "instant" score results were more than good enough, I'm sure. So we went out for supper to a local place to celebrate that and his birthday, which is tomorrow.

I also solved some ongoing issues with communication between Linux and OpenVMS on the Alpha. One was really dumb and shouldn't be that way. VMS is not case-sensitive. Like MS-DOS, it accepts lower and upper case file names as equivalent. Likewise user names and even passwords. Linux, like UNIX, is case-sensitive almost everywhere. It turns out, unbeknownst to me, that MySQL on Linux is also case-sensitive. Usernames! SMITH and smith are not the same. The reason I could not open a session from a VMS client to a Linux MySQL server was just that. VMS transmits the username, even though it was typed in lower case, as upper case. MySQL thinks that is a different user and doesn't recognize it. Brute force solution? Register an upper case user on the Linux MySQL server, and associate it specifically with the OpenVMS host. Voila! Connectivity.

And now, in the interest of non-geeky diversity, have a couple of ponies.

The Boys at age 13

One of my favorite photos of our two boys, Asher (left) and his half-brother Archie.

Farrier comes for all three tomorrow. Must be up early, so to bed.
