Mostly shopping
Dec. 30th, 2010 10:44 amWent out in search of a new cabinet for the kitchen so we can get more stuff out of Red's reach. The goal is to remove temptation so he doesn't have to be crated when left alone. So far, food has been the only weakness he has displayed. Otherwise, he's doing beautifully.
Got what we wanted, on sale for half price, no less. Decided to do some other shopping stuff and ended up wasting most of the day that way.
Got Gary a good Targus case for his new laptop, and a wireless mouse. Meanwhile, snail mail delivered my netbook. As promised, it was new and untouched, just the seal on the box had been broken apparently. All appears to be in working order, and I'm typing (or trying to type) this on that reduced size keyboard, which will take a bit of getting used to. I'm currently running the Ubuntu netbook edition off an SD card, and suspect I'll be installing this in lieu of the default Xandros system which is getting long in the tooth and is pretty inflexible when it comes to installing new applications.
Performance is pretty good, at least for what I'm used to doing. I don't imagine the high speed gamers would care for it, but for web cruising and word processing it's fine. Haven't tried to do IM or IRC yet, but I'm sure it can handle those as well. It has a webcam and sound card, and came with Skype installed. I've never used that, but probably will try it now.
It's hard to believe that tomorrow is the 31st. This has seemed like a particularly short year to me. Too many things happening in too little time, I guess. Tomorrow Gary will pick up his mom in Chicago and bring her out for New Year's. Then on Saturday afternoon, his brother will pick her up, I guess, and take her to his place.
An interesting and nostalgic note, from a BBC news item: Today was the last day you could get Kodachrome film developed anywhere. The last remaining processor has closed down his facility. The Kodachrome process was never available for home photographers to use, and required complex and supposedly secret steps. The article didn't say, but I assume this means that the actual Kodachrome film has been unavailable for a while now. Another turning point in technology. I guess I may live long enough to see the last landline telephone system in the US shut down as well.
Oh, and there was an earthquake in Indiana, but we didn't notice anything here. And the temperature is unseasonably warm, still in the 40°F range at 10 pm. They say we'll break 50°F tomorrow. The seven or so inches of accumulated snow on the ground here has rapidly turned to slush.
