Hit raine und sniwe
Feb. 23rd, 2012 09:00 pmLiterally. I was still in doubt about the predicted storm, as late as 2:30 this afternoon. Not much longer after that, though, the rain started. Just a light rain, but by 3:30 it was changing to snow at times. Big heavy clumps of wet flakes, because the temperature was well above freezing. We crossed into freezing temperatures around 5 pm, while doing barn chores. The precipitation changed from rain to sleet and then snow in the time it took me to wak from the house to the arena. In another 15 minutes, the ground was white.
Temperatures are holding right around freezing, so the snow seems to be melting nearly as fast as it hits the ground. In spite of coming down thickly, we still have an accumulation of only an eighth inch or so.
I remain seriously doubtful about all the scary forecasts we heard today, including repeated predictions of 4 to 8 inches accumulation overnight. It won't be cold enough for that, and even early today they had the low for tonight in the upper 20s.
While I wouldn't object to another three day weekend, I don't think it's going to happen.
[Update, 4:00 am. The snow has continued to fall heavily. There is now about four inches of heavy, wet snow accumulated over overything and it is still coming. It isn't cold outside, or at least, not very. Just a degree or so below freezing, enough to let the snow pile up instead of turning into a flood. Had this been rain, it would have been less than an inch of precipitation I think. As it stands, it will be a major travel hazard.]
