Conversion proceeds apace
May. 8th, 2006 08:34 pmI am absolutely wiped out from crawling around removing old cables and then rewiring new ones. However, the progress is good. Four of sixteen total seats are up and running on the Linux software now. Another five should come up tomorrow, as I've got the cables all in place now and only need to plug them in and fire the machine up. The remaining seven are simple software replacements on existing hardware, no other change, and the configurations are already tested, so that's a big nothing.
The library is delightfully quiet when there are no internet terminals available. It seems (as I've been saying for years now) that all the obnoxious and irritating people come in just to play with the computers. When I announced mid-afternoon today that we could be up and running by Tuesday, everyone agreed I should keep quiet about it (we've announced Friday or Saturday as the target.)
There were actually people sitting around in the library reading books. This is no longer a common sight. I think it gets too noisy with the teenagers in there, so those who want to just read end up taking their book elsewhere.
