Weird face recognition thingie
Aug. 27th, 2006 09:05 amI am so tempted to give this thing a horse or dog photo... At least I recognize most of the people it matched me with, though.

Curiously enough, this sparked an old memory. A graduate school friend was very insistent that I looked like Richard Dreyfuss. I couldn't see it then, but now that we're both going gray, there does appear to be a mild resemblance.

Date: 2006-08-27 02:56 pm (UTC)I did give it a horse photo and the result was "no matches." When I tried it for myself, I got few results and had to look those up. Fine with me. I look like... me!

Date: 2006-08-27 03:48 pm (UTC)It would be interesting to try it with a batch of family photos, which is what it was really designed to do, but I'm not about to bother with uploading all those over dialup.

Date: 2006-08-27 04:28 pm (UTC)This thing is cool, but there's still a long way to go. I tried it twice, once with an old picture (no beard) and once with a newer picture (beard). Each time, it gave me completely different results. It also seemed to pick up on my facial expression. I'm guessing it's using a very basic outline/edge algorithm. While this certainly will produce results of faces that look like yours, it definitely doesn't check bone structure and face shape.
Then again, it's not an FBI/CIA/CSA application either :D (aka "Whaddaya want for nothing?")
