Finished the shawl at last, photographed it, wrote up the pattern so I can include it in the box to my roving swap pal. I've mentioned this thing several times, so:

Fern Lace Shawl Fern Lace Shawl

September, 2006: This lacy shawl is knit from handspun 2-ply blue-faced Leicester wool, about 16 wpi. The lace pattern is quite easy once you get used to the alternation of the rows. Finished size 18 x 56 inches, weight 8 ounces.

Close-up to show the lace pattern more closely.

Two more skeins and a woven scarf to finish by Monday. Should be possible. ;p

Wow, that is very good work.

One of those "patience" activities, I'm sure. ;p But yeah.. with patience applied, I can see how it's well worth the time.

That looks very nice! How long (roughly) do you think you put into it? I've tried taking up knitting once or twice for a short time but it's never really 'stuck' with me. Sewing, however, I do still enjoy from time to time

Nice indeed. ^^

I think that work isn't suited to my attention span, that looks complex enough already... though I guess I could manage some "spider on caffeine" pattern, if I really tried. =)

Some patience required. ;p Actually, spinning the wool into yarn is the slow process. The knitting for this goes pretty quickly, and is done on large size needles.

I'd estimate it was about 25 hours for spinning the yarn and 15 hours for the knitting. Hard to be real accurate because I tend to do these in little bits of time here and there, and often have two or three different projects going at once.

There's another example right here.

Knitting can be suitable for short time periods and many interruptions, and so can spinning. But I wouldn't recommend lace stitches for that, unless you want it as an exercise in concentration or memory. I found it difficult to remember my place in the pattern at first, and often had to rip stitches out to fix errors. After about a third of the way through, though, it became sufficiently ingrained and was much easier.

It actually is. This particular wool is fine and smooth so it has a lustre that is almost silk-like.

Too bad there's no way to let people touch it online. The feel of it is spectacularly soft.

Excellent work! As is my usual reaction to fine knitting projects, I'm in awe of your skill and patience.

Of course, there's always a niggling error in the pattern that you think everyone will see and no one does. I use the Amish slogan: "Only God makes anything perfect" if I do get caught. :)

Yes, and very soft. Woolen underwear would be very pleasant of made of this particular wool. I want to get some more and make myself a scarf or sweater of it.

That's all too lovely, sweet pony. I should get pics of the shawl my friend loom-wove for my sweetie.

Mindful meditation can produce lovely works ;)
