Rikki Too, our missing cat who vanished 8 days ago apparently returned to the house this morning minus a little weight but otherwise healthy and looking for attention which he returns with squeaks and purrs. No telling where he was but I expect someone tried to "adopt" him and he only got loose now. I think we'll put a collar and tag on him, the kind that will pull off if he gets it hung up on something.

A bird's eye view. Or maybe a bird's nightmare. Too close!

Yeah, it's a relief to have one come right. Losing a cat, a bunny, and a lamb all in the same week is a bit much.

Glad the cat came back :)

Does he "chirp" at birds while he's stalking?

Actually he's much more of a rodent chaser. He watches birds through the window in absolute silence, though, and we believe he has in fact caught one or two in the past. This is the one who has killed and eaten squirrels, and who sometimes brings back four or five mice overnight that we have to intercept before the dogs eat them.

In spite of being Nimrod the mighty hunter, he is very affectionate and cuddly to both us and the dogs. The other two cats don't care for him much.

Ever notice how much a cat resembles a baby seal when you hide their ears like that?

I'm not much of a "cat person", more of a dog man....
Don't get me wrong, I do not hate cats, I just tolerate them, They don't make me happy as dogs do...
that looks a well fed feline, but I guess that's his own doing, by the way you describe his hunting abilities...

Glad you got him home !

We like dogs and cats both, and usually have several of each. Right now two dogs, three cats. Some cats are more doglike in their psychology and behavior at times, and this guy is one of those.

Yes, he is well-fed. Just as well, because when tested he came up positive for the feline immune virus (similar to AIDS in humans) and being a little extra hefty is a sign that he's not sick with anything in particular.

Haha, bringing presents home for the dogs is probably why they like him :D

My cat has never been allowed to roam and almost never has even escaped (too many dangers around up here for tiny housecats, like large mountain lions). But despite never seeing a bird up close, whenever she sees one through the window, she goes into stalking mode and chirps at them. I somehow doubt birds fall for that, but who knows...

We've had cats who did that chirping thing. The present three, however, are all silent stalkers.

Yes, but it's his own doing. He's a big, friendly cat. He lacks the gene for standoffishness or whatever it is that most cats have. Goes right up to strangers and begs them to pick him up or pet him at least.

The difference is that this cat we like. We wouldn't deliberately try to get rid of him.

He is obviously very glad to be back, too. When I got home from work he greeted me at the door and followed me around, squeaking at me until I petted him. Last night when I was trying to read he insisted on occupying my lap and he's quite a load, let me tell you.

I've read an article documenting a "friendliness gene" in cats. It was determined by having a group of volunteers interview a bunch of kitties of known pedigree, and rating them for friendliness. There was substantial agreement in the ratings, and the friendliness gene was found to be a single dominant gene that showed a typical Mendelian inheritance pattern. Of course, it could have been reported the other way around, since it was a behavioral rather than molecular description. The standoffishness gene would be a single recessive gene showing a Mendelian inheritance pattern.

Cats are pretty good at taking care of themselves. However, this gene must be counterproductive in some cases, such as where Rikki Too jumps into strangers' vehicles and wants to go for a ride with them. He used to always get into the vet's car and the farrier's truck when they came to visit.
