Actually it didn't look so bad for much of the day, but around 5:30 this afternoon things took a definite turn for the worse. It rained lions and tigers at the library from about 6:30 to almost 8 pm. I drove home in continuous but not terribly heavy rain, and noticed that the roads were just beginning to flood in several places. Lights were out at home, had been out since 7 pm according to Gary. We gave up on a real dinner and raided the fridge for sandwich fixings and yogurt, and about halfway through our kerosene-lit supper the lights did come back on. So we had some canned soup heated up too. The entire northern tier of counties in Illinois is under a flash flood warning at the moment. The heavy rain and lightning seems to have moved one county southward, but could well be back by morning. The current forecast for Union, the nearest incorporated place to us, reads "Thunderstorms likely until 1:00 am. After 1:00 am, thunderstorms likely." I kid you not.

I don't really expect the power to stay on, so I'm going to shut the computer down as soon as I finish posting this.

Sooo... it'll thunder until 1 AM, then it'll stop for a moment, then it'll start back up again?

Lions and tigers? I'll take a breeding pair of both please.

That's a scary-looking system moving across your area on radar.

It never occured to me you're in Illinois, my father's home state- though I'm pure bred Floridian, I've always been curious about where my parents came from- dad from Illinois and mom from North Carolina.

Actually it pretty much calmed down by midnight and stayed quiet. I think the NWS offices in Illinois have been handed over to a lot of inexperienced kids to save money. Someone had the notion that the computers now do all the work so they didn't need meteorologists any more, and our written forecasts are often about that incoherent. You can tell they revise by cutting and pasting and never read through the whole thing for grammar, or even for the sense of what they're saying.

Sorry, they were rather too fast moving for capture. ;p

It really did look impressive on the radar, yes. There was not a lot of wind though, just torrential rain that came in waves alternating with brief periods of calm. Good for growing stuff but not for haymaking.

I'm from Michigan originally, but I've now spent more years in Illinois than I did in my home state (by just a slight margin.)

I've never been to either yet- just states near the water- South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington DC...

*horsey grin*

States near the water? Michigan has more miles of coastline than some of those states you name here. The water just doesn't have so much salt in it. You need to see the Great Lakes to appreciate just how huge they are.

D'oh

Sounds quite nice really, we haven't had a thunderstorm for ages.

*notices you left the pantry door slightly open and manages to get inside*

Oh good, just get rid of those mice while you're in there.

I don't mind a thunderstorm at all when it has no violent winds in it. As such, these were pretty good.

*snickers*

You could even give our Rikkitoo a run for his money, and he's the fattest cat I've ever had.
