2008 Towel Exchange
Originally uploaded by Altivo
I don't know where my towels are. I made four for the weaving guild exchange, kept one for myself, and took the other three this morning to the meeting where we swapped. I got back three very different towels, but because I had to leave immediately to get to work I have no idea who received these three.

There must have been at least 50 towels total, all different colors and styles. I'll post a photo of the three I got back, maybe tomorrow. These are mercerized cotton flake (WEBS' Noho, 1200 ypp) woven in a Wall of Troy twill.

Otherwise, a typical Wednesday. Next year's guild challenge? Pick the color you hate the most, and make something in that color. This will be a tough one.

I don't know where my towels are.

Consider the obligatory Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference made.

Of course that WAS intentional. ;p And I don't know. But at least I know where the ones I got back are.

Ahh...yet your journal is set to lilac. :D

I am not keen on Yellow myself, yet my kitchen has a very yellow paint on the walls. So I cannot talk.

Any ideas what you're going to make?

Lavender or indigo are fine with me. It's that deep purple color that has been a huge fad with older women here for years and years that I can't stand, mostly because it's so overused. For a while you could go to weaving or sewing exhibits knowing that 90% of what you would see was going to be purple.

I'm not sure what I'll make yet, but I think it has to have several shades of magenta, purple, and pink in it. I believe they should have titled the challenge "YECH: Your Excruciating Color Horror."

Why not complete the hidiousness by making a toilet roll cover?

Umm, no. Just no. Though I laugh to think of something in the same vein. Back when I was still a tiny foal, there was a fad for a different kind of cover: kitschy covers for bottles of liquor. I guess, like toilet paper rolls, they are embarrassing and must be hidden. ;p

Those things are usually projects in garish acrylic yarn and large crochet motifs anyway. In weaving we look for more subtlety than that. Fortunately this challenge allows a lot of latitude in terms of what the final project should be. It can be tiny or large, and serve any purpose at all. I'll have to come up with an idea that I can use as a gift for someone who is not as offended by objects purpureal as I am.

Horrible, are they not? I remember being terrified of my aunt's. It just had an expression on it's face that was wrong.

Interesting, in that it will more likely draw attention TO the offending bottle, rather than away from it.

Heh. Before I even read the comment threads, I was planning to ask you what purple item you were planning to make next year.

You know, thats more than just a hobby, you doing this. Those
look very professionally made...dare I say, machine made. Back
in the day you'd be very busy and making much coin.

You should have seen the others in the swap. Many could have come right off the shelf at some place like "Bed, Bath, and Beyond" or "Linens and Things." Except the colors and designs were bolder and more imaginative than most commercial offerings...

Those towels look nice *tests one with his paw* Wor sort of towels are they meant to be? Bathroom, hand, hair?

These are fairly heavy and will be quite absorbent. While they could be used in the kitchen, I think they would be most practical as little hand towels that you'd put out in the loo for guests to use. The size is 18 x 24 inches.

Now now, someone of your learning would know you're supposed to say Lavatory.

Or washroom or any one of a dozen other euphemisms. Over here it's often called the "John" for who knows what reason. ;p

Water closet? I don't know why they're called Johns either. John was a word used instead of the sentence ending in American slang "Man". It was used in London though.

"Don't tell me what's important Man"
"Don't tell me what's important John"
