Outside temperature is down in the 40s. Hope it doesn't frost tonight.

I seem to have gotten a cold somewhere. Icky. Well, maybe better tomorrow. *heads off to bed*

Frost

Yeah here in Michigan I just brought our potted rosebushes inside, quite possibly a killing frost on the way. Icky is right!! Had to light the furnace yesterday, I was losing the ability to type due to fingers stiffening up in the cold... And Orion's riding high in the sky. All signs of frozen-ness to come. I'll miss wearing sandals!

I was out this morning around 6am for pitch hiking hiking. Early fall is the best time for it, as it's dark out later and the trees still have foliage which cuts down on night-vision-ruining light pollution. No moon and no clouds, so no reflected city light, either. It was about 32F, nice and frosty.

I had to light my first fire of the winter last night. Its 14 degrees now, so it's warmed up a bit. Maybe it'll go back down again tonight.

We made it down to 36F/2C last night. No frost on the ground this morning, which is good. My vegetables are just starting to really produce, so I'd like the hard frost to hold off for a while. The next few nights are expected to be considerably warmer, probably because it will be cloudy.

We didn't quite hit freezing, but close. Light pollution is something I really hate, but it's awfully hard to get anyone to understand. It doesn't bother their television watching at all, and they feel so much safer when it never gets dark outside.

Oooh, black currants. Soooo tasty. We can sometimes get them as jelly here, but never as juice. Apparently there was some idea back 60 years ago that currant bushes were a threat to white pine growth (there's a rust or fungus that they have in common) and farmers were told it was their patriotic duty to destroy all currants, both red and black. We've never recovered from it, though the warnings have pretty much died away.

Theoretically, yes, but in my experience it doesn't work very well and is pretty impractical. The size of the plants and the garden itself really rules this out.
