So long, January

And so long, thaw. Got above freezing on the 31st, first time in a solid month. Likewise today, but now it's dropping again.

Baked kaiser rolls today. First try in quite a while, these turned out decent. I tried adding steam to the oven by putting a cast iron skillet in the bottom and filling it with water. That worked better than any method I've used before.

We still need the cold for apple trees and daffodils, but I agree it would be nice to keep the temperature in the 20s rather than -20s.

The skillet/humidifier method!

My wife's nanny used to do that one.

Its been up to 36 degrees here.

Trouble is, it's hard on the skillet. I can see that another such usage will strip the hard-won seasoning from the cast iron, leaving it naked and prone to rust.

However, I can't use my cast iron on this range anyway. It's one of those flat glass tops, so the skillets and dutch oven can only be used in the oven or on the woodstove.
