Decided to try a couple of things on the home equipment instead of at work. I can afford an outage here, but not there. First I needed to back up things in my home directory, though. Oops. Didn't realize I had so much stuff in there. Backing up over a 10MHz network is slow. Looks like this will run all night, so no more progress this evening. Just as well. I need to be doing other things.

Tess was overly anxious to get out of the barn this afternoon, and I couldn't blame her much in the humid, hot air that we had. However, when she starts prancing and tugging at the lead it's just too dangerous. I "whoa'd" her and made her stand while I gave her a stern lecture. She managed to behave reasonably well for the remaining distance (maybe 250 feet) but when I turned her loose she took off at a gallop, squealing and farting like a spoiled foal. I guess she got it worked out though, because when I went to get her three hours later she was all docile and contrite, and even came to greet me at the gate.

Sarah went back to the vet for a dressing change and check this morning. They're pleased with her progress and think the stitches can come out at the beginning of next week. I don't know if that means the vet-wrap and splint come off too or not, but if it does, she'll probably need an Elizabethan collar for a while to keep her from licking and chewing it. Dog psychology is weird. She's still so eager to go in the car that she starts leaping and barking when you pick up her leash. This in spite of the fact that nine out of ten trips in the past few years have been to the vet.

I had a close call myself while making dinner. I was baking cornbread, and as I usually do I melted some butter in the glass pan. That greases the pan and I pour the rest into the batter. There must have been a speck of superheated water in there this time, and as I started to dump the hot melted butter out it exploded in a burst that sprayed half the kitchen and all of me. Fortunately my glasses shielded my eyes, though it wasn't that hot where it hit my face anyway. The only real burn is on the hand that was holding the pan, and that hasn't blistered. It just looks and feels like an oddly shaped spot of sunburn.

Ubuntu has definitely hacked up the gdm package, essentially castrating it. I think I'm going to try installing the regular Debian version of the package tomorrow. That should help a lot if it works.

Ouch! The melted butter splatter does not sound fun. :(

Dog psychology is weird.

I've been told I should take the dogs for rides so that don't expect to go to the vet each trip. When I think of it I'm usually on the way to the vet with them ;o)

Glad the butter didn't burn badly. At first I thought it read that the pan exploded and I imagined glass shards everywhere.
