altivo: Horsie cupcakes (cupcake)

I need to make an icon from the flat pony. I think I've said that before, too.

Wasn't really that excessive a day, but we've been up late the last two nights, which probably contributes. Today was the usual chores, make breakfast, put supper into the crockpot because we'd be gone all afternoon, and head off to that musical session. The music was fun, nothing was competitive or aggressive about it, and we got home just at dark.

There's more to do this evening, of course, but I could go to bed right now. Trouble is, I'd probably wake up at two or three in the morning and not be able to get back to sleep.

We've had freezing fog on and off all day. For those who don't get that where they live, freezing fog is a condition where the air temperature is below freezing and the air is supersaturated with water vapor. Normally this would produce fog at any temperature, but below freezing the condensate forms elaborate crystalline structures on the surface of twigs, leaves, and other small diameter objects.

At sunrise, all the trees and shrubs were covered with hoarfrost, some of it an inch long. They look like they are covered with sparkly white fur. It's so fragile that if you breath on it the crystals appear to dissolve back into the air. It kept melting and reforming during the day as the temperature fluctuated around freezing. I expect a good coating again overnight.

The weather service reported that the air temperature at 1000 feet was around 50F, while we were experiencing 25F at ground level. A layer of dense clouds lay between the two thermal zones, but no rain fell. It's like seeing salt or sugar crystals forming in a cooling saturated solution. Weird looking and interesting to see.
