Wet Wednesday
Dreary. Rained all night, drizzled and fogged all day. If it weren't for a certain fox continuing to both tease and amuse me this afternoon, I might have fallen asleep at work.
Tess not much changed, which is certainly better than if she had gone to holding her foot up off the ground or lying down.
Tomorrow I have to go to a presentation on Drupal, which does in fact interest me and work is paying. But it takes a big chunk out of the middle of the day.
Postcard in the mail from Van Dyke taxidermy supply announcing a sale on full size animal forms. Might be fun to get a lion or a cougar and cover it with plush fur instead of real hide as intended. Taxidermy supply places have things you never even knew existed, and even things that you wish you had never found out to exist.

While much of the company's clientele may be engaged in activities of which I don't approve, such as trophy hunting, taxidermy also plays a role in preservation and education, museum displays and so forth. The materials and tools that they sell are not evil by their mere existence, nor are they made out of animals. I find it amusing to take such things and put them to an unexpected use that is quite tangential to their intended purpose.

I've never actually used it, but I've been hearing a lot about it the past few months. Some form of Content Management System, right?

On the other paw, Drupal is not without its own blind spots and management quirks. Upgrading is a pain in the butt, and they keep finding security issues, like those that crop up with phpbb. If you don't have shell access to the actual server, it can be a real pain to do some things.
The library website, which is pretty modest actually, is at:

The great thing about Drupal is that you'll never get those horrible dull-blue-grey sites with jpeg corners.
It looks pretty good.
Actually, it looks like your main logo needs its corners removed.

In general, I take a utilitarian view of websites. I hate it when they are loaded with time-wasting graphics and flash. I focus on making my as streamlined as possible so that they load fast and the information is right there where you can find it.
The old site that I'd inherited had something like 20 interlinked pages in it, and analysis of the http logs showed that no one ever looked at most of them. Literally, no one. So I just scrapped all of it. Then something came up that I found utterly incredible. People were complaining that I'd "taken away Google."
Yep. There was a link to Google on one of the old pages, and they had been relying on that as their only way to find Google. None of them knew how to type in "google.com" for a URL. I was told to put it back, so that's why "Search the Internet" is wasting space in the left-hand column. They had started putting their Google keyword searches into the "Search this site" box at the upper left, and of course, they were getting nothing back.
I've never had a high opinion of human intelligence in general. Working as a librarian does nothing to improve that, believe me.

My current client is very similar. He'll be right behind me, watching everything I do while I quickly toss in some text to an image. He'll say, "Okay, that's good, now email to me," and then I'll tweak another thing or two while he watches, and then he'll say, "Did you email it yet?"
Hey, you could store everything they entered into that box, to compile a list of what library users are searching for!
Not that you'd want to look at THOSE peoples' lists.

As for wondering what people put into search boxes on the internet, I've looked at the key word searches used by people who arrive at our sites through Google. It's amazing that they ever find anything at all.

My vote is Lion...
Oh yeah, taxidermy supply houses are great for teeth and other parts of a more realistic fursuit.

Yeah, a lion would be fun. But those plastic forms are too pricy really for me to consider it. If I had lots of money and didn't have to work for a living, I might well be a full time artist of some sort...

There's even a Droople user group that meets in town, so I've really no excuse other than laziness for not installing the latest version and really trying to make it work!
