Though I would much prefer to abolish the civil privileges associated with marriage and leave the entire issue in the hands of the various religious groups to do with it what they wish, that seems extremely unlikely to ever happen. In light of the disastrous result of this week's US election, I have to take a position in favor of civil recognition of same-sex marriages. If we believe in the freedoms and rights that are confirmed by the US Constitution, we cannot allow this administration or any other to deny political, civil, or social privilege on the basis of sexual orientation, gender, race, or religious belief.
And that means too that this absurd notion of amending the Constitution to enshrine the bigotry of one kind of Christianity as national law and policy must be stopped. Tell your congresscritter and senators that you are opposed to any constitutional amendment that attempts to define marriage. Such an amendment is contrary to the spirit and intent of the Constitution, and would be just plain stupid.
