For several days I've been hearing the familiar snuffling and grunting sounds out in the woodlot, and a glance at the calendar confirmed that it was getting to be time. I watched carefully, even hunted for the evidence but found little or nothing. Then tonight, in the post-sunset duskiness of a snowcovered pasture, I found the tell-tale tracks. It was too dark for a photograph, but there is no mistaking that shuffling, hunching gait.

It was the footprints of the elusive snark, seen in our area only around the last week of January.

I went snark hunting once. I spent the whole night in the woods for nothing.

Not to snark at you or anything, but wouldn't that have been snipe hunting? ;)

Good thing you didn't find (or get found by) a boojum.

Might have been a snipe. It was a long time ago. A Boojum? Never heard of them.

Is that what you're playing at? Heh, Rabbit Hole Day...

People have told me that they were expecting me to participate in the festivities, and even cited my rather short and mundane post earlier as "proof that I was planning something for later..."

And now that it's night, hmm... Should I or shouldn't I...

Ah, the snark. Many was the time I set out to espy a snark, only to be defeated when someone turned my copy of Peterson's Field Guide to Snarks and Allies right-side up and showed me that their range was farther south on the range maps than I thought. You're a lucky one just to see the tracks.

(I should've done a rabbit hole entry. But no, I had to write something reality based. I wish I could say the thing about Detroit could only happen in a rabbit hole....)

Or perhaps the money went down the rabbit hole in pursuit of that elusive white rabbit. He needs new gloves you see, having left his best pair at home where that monstrous Alice is now stuck with one foot up the fireplace. Or was it his fan? Dear me, no wonder he's late, late, late.
