OK, OK... Now I've gotten two e-mails from people worrying about where I am and what happened to me. The short answer is nothing, at least to me personally. It has just been one of those weeks.

A week ago my mate and partner was stung by a bee while mowing around the vegetable garden. This should have been a minor irritation, since he has been keeping bees for five years now and has been stung any number of times without reaction. But, this time it was serious. He ended up in the hospital overnight, and was told to get rid of the bees and start carrying an emergency bee-sting treatment kit. Apparently some people develop a sensitivity only after repeated stings, and he now has a severe one. I could continue to do the bee chores under his directions, since I'm not allergic, but it seems best to give the hives away and get them out of here. Otherwise he won't be able to work in the garden, something he enjoys.

We also have two people out on vacation from work, and are in the final crunch to spend down some grant money before a deadline. At the same time, we're writing the proposal for another grant. So I haven't been able to chatter online nearly as much as usual, but really, everything is all right and will return to normal soon I hope.

A request for some of my old stories sent me scrambling last week for the word processor files, only to discover that they still resided only on my Amiga. Fortunately, it is still right here under my work table and booted right up when I tried it. Getting the files out proved a bit more difficult, as the floppy drive seems to be failing. I had to get it running on my home LAN and transfer the exported files that way. Working that out forced me to revisit the Amiga environment, which I had mothballed almost ten years ago, and I realized it still has a lot of things I like. Consequently, I found myself trying to find IRC and MUCK clients that would work. This isn't as easy as I'd first expected. Though there were clients that worked back in 1995-96, the servers and protocols have changed a fair amount in the decade since. Those clients aren't entirely successful today, and most Amiga developer support either faded away when Commodore kicked the boing ball or went on to work with Macs, PCs, or the Amiga's PPC-based successors.

The end result is that I've been spending my limited home computer time re-installing and configuring and testing, rather than actually being available online. I hardly expected to be missed. But thanks for asking. :)

That's a bummer about the bees.

I figured you were busy with farm tasks, being that it's spring and all. And end of school year would affect your work, even if the library isn't tied directly to a school. I'm sure I'm not alone in being glad to hear from you.
