"Night Rider's Lament"... oh gawd... that song makes me cry sometimes when I sing it, if I'm not to careful. Guess I identify with it a lot. And I can't even yodel. :)

Yup. One of the few songs I wouldn't even try to sing, and for that reason.

Why'd someone want to go on vacation in Michigan, of all places? ;)

Well, probably most wouldn't. But I was born and raised there. And it still has blue lakes and green pine and maple forests, sandy beaches, wildlife (even bears) and a lot of quiet. I imagine Michigan means Detroit to many, but to me it means the Great Lakes and quiet country cemeteries and apple orchards. Right now especially it means some of the finest cider in the world and some of the most beautiful autumn colors. My ancestors began arriving in Michigan in 1828, before it was even a state. The last ones to arrive got there well before 1900. Those are deep roots. In one of those tiny cemeteries I can put my hand on the graves of four generations of ancestors, all within twenty paces or so.

Oh, by the way, the fourth part of that heritage is German. But they only let me list three. :)

Why Michigan? Oh... no reason.

Actually it's because you can tell people where you are going by opening up your right hand and pointing ("I'm going to Traverse City" *points to near the top of little finger right next to ring finger*) You can do it with the Upper Peninsula too, if you take your left hand and turn it so that the thumb sticks up (the thumb is the Keweenaw Peninsula). But if you need to show the whole state, you need someone else to point.

And here I thought I was the only one who used the left hand for the UP trick. ;P

Warty politics, rust-rotted economy, but I still love Michigan.
