Well, [livejournal.com profile] kaysho's post about the Fossil wrist PDA inspires me to show the technological gadget that currently has my own avarice and lust keyed up. Many of you may remember seeing something like this on Star Trek Next Generation ten or so years back. Well, they actually can make it now, and the price has dropped from $250 to $70 in the year since I first saw it. Want...

Yep, and I've wanted that keyboard ever since then. So far I've only seen them on mail order or web sites, though. I'd really like to find one in person so I can try before buying. Lacking that though, it's inevitable that I will give in soon.

Trouble with a flat keyboard like that, though, is that you get no kinetic feedback. Imagine typing on a keyboard like that, and you'll (probably) understand.

Oh sure, I understand that. I've played on all sorts of keyboards with varying tactile elements and capabilities. You adjust quickly enough in order to get the sound you want. This thing can't (yet) be a substitute for a grand piano, but on the other hand, you can take it anywhere. Try putting a baby grand in your backpack. :)

There is a more deluxe version that has stereo speakers at each end of the keyboard. I haven't heard one of these, but given the sound quality of inexpensive synthesizers these days, I imagine they sound pretty decent even over the tiny speaker included. A pair of amplified computer speakers should make them sound better yet.
