Some of you know that I'm very fond of Australian wines, generally reds. Well, we tried a South Australian chardonnay with the turkey today and it was magnificent. Fortunately there is now none left, or I'd be trying to crawl into the bottle. Chardonnay is usually a full bodied wine for a white, and this was no exception. A very tangible spicy vanilla character that went well with the turkey and fixings.

So is it the wine or the famous tryptophan in the turkey that has me ready for a nap? Well, I'll lay it to having spent four hours on my feet in the kitchen preparing everything: roast turkey with my own bread stuffing (includes sun dried tomatoes and spicy sausage), pumpkin pie, apple pie, squash, two kinds of cranberry sauce, Polish style mushrooms, gravy and mashed potatoes (the latter were my mate's contribution, he seasons them particularly well.) Chardonnay from [yellow tail] and raspberry tea. It's only 5:30 in the afternoon, but I think I'm done being productive for the day. :p

I heard that the tryptophan in turkey is such a low percent that you'd have to eat more turkey than the stomach would allow in to actually feel the sedative effects...

Maybe. I've never given the tryptophan theory much credence anyway. However, I discovered last year that one common brand of horse tranquilizer (Quietex) contains only tryptophan as an active ingredient. ;P

Yes, but it'd be much more concentrated than anything found in a poor turkey. ;)

OMG! What happened to your hooves!? ;p

Happy tryptophan day. :)

All hooves are feet, just not all feet are hooves.

We just had the dessert, having recovered sufficiently from the rest to manage it. Pumpkin pie is just pumpkin pie. OK, I'm not a huge fan of it. The apple pie, however, is stellar. I make good pies in general, but this time I tried Dutch apple rather than my tried and true, and used two varieties of apple that we picked ourself: Winesap and Empire. Mmmm.

I am dizzy and ill ...... not from the food but from the crowd. And they commandeered my chair so now I'm typing from the floor. My bedroom is the only quiet part of the house ...

I don't drink anymore, but I would have never recomended a red wine with turkey. I would recomend a dry white wine, like a Trocken. :)

Those are old stuffy rules. But we did have chardonnay, which is white. I am not fond of the very dry whites as a rule, to me they are rather like dilute vinegar and have no more taste or fragrance than that. In general I prefer reds and roses to most whites.

They used to sell Tryptophan in capsules at say GNC.

Alas, like Ephedra, it was effective and OTC and
therefore had to be destroyed. Some idiot had
seizures so it was banned.

Of course Aspirin can kill you right quick if you
take too much but its been around too long for
the Pharmacutical industry to lobby against.
