I know. But I cannot have goldenstallion.com and honeygoldenstallion, etc... if I was not a Pally. You know, a Palomino. Which is defined as the color of a new penny and the mane and tail can be anything from the same color as much whiter until pure white is obtained. I have always loved the contrast, myself.
White sox notwithstanding. Perhaps a blaze or a Star and a stripe (Steed) or...
Well, gee whiz, what color are you, actually?

Date: 2006-02-21 09:48 am (UTC)Black is recessive? I had no idea! I have a fascination with color variations due in no small part to my interest in snake coloring (particularly corn snakes, which have a vast variety) and my penchant for redheads.
In other news: that icon still gives me flutters - it's sexy!

Date: 2006-02-21 10:22 am (UTC)Yes, true black is one of the most recessive color patterns among horses. Interestingly, the one that dominates over any other color genes is white. Rather the opposite of what we might expect. The reason virtually all horses aren't white is that the homozygous combination of two white genes is lethal. (Foals are stillborn.) That severely limits the spread of the true white gene.
The common dominant colorations are the various kinds of bay, dark brown or reddish brown body color with dark or black mane and tail. White markings, such as the face blaze or star and white stockings can be overlaid on top of that. Duns and buckskins also are dominant over many, but not all, color genes.
Two other genes that will dominate everything but the pure white are the one for Appaloosa spotting and the one for the tobiano paint pattern. (As opposed to overo, which is recessive like black.)
Horses have almost as many color variations as dogs.

Date: 2006-02-22 08:55 am (UTC)I had no idea about the white horse thing. How odd! No wonder white horses are seen as such oddities - not just because of the whole "white = purity" thing, but because it's rare.
And as for the picture, it's lovely in itself, but for me it's knowing that it represents you that really makes it nice :)

Date: 2006-02-22 09:21 am (UTC)I'm looking to see whether I somehow accidentally slipped you some potion or other. Your frequent compliments don't compute. But thanks anyway. ;D

Date: 2006-02-22 09:26 am (UTC)And I think you mistake my expressions of admiration for compliments. I do my best not to offer pretty, empty words except when absolutely necessary from a diplomatic standpoint.
The things I say may not compute for you, but that's your issue ;) I'm not just exercising my wordsmithing - I like you pretty darn well for not actually having met you in person, and I like the few images I've seen of you as well.
Just because I'm a Coyote doesn't mean I'm lying ;)

Date: 2006-02-22 11:06 am (UTC)No, I didn't mean to be accusing you of lying, not at all. Generally I'm onto coyote tricks, too, and you're not setting off those alarms. Forgive me for not being used to that sort of reaction. You're so sweet, and without being saccharine about it. *hug*
