Well, OK, I'll do this one, though I'm not quite clear on what it means by "close".

I tried out TrustFlow II for LiveJournal. The following people not on the friends list for [livejournal.com profile] altivo are close by:

TrustFlow II: Who is closest to your friends list?

[livejournal.com profile] kakoukorakos isn't on your LJ friends list? He should be. You and he are both intellectual and should get along fabulously.

I don't doubt you're right. We just haven't crossed paths yet and I generally don't pursue folks I haven't met. :)

I thought I'd suggested it before actually, a long time ago.

Huh. You actually don't have Canid_Anubis on your friends list? I would've figured otherwise, if asked, based on sheer assumption.
He reminds me of you, because he's an "elder" and he's also pretty intelligent and respected. (at least, as far as i can tell.)

Yeah, and i don't get how this thing figures 'closeness' either. There are some strange picks near the top of mine.

I think it has something to do with those people being on the friend's list of a lot of your friends(or maybe even more down the line? dunno) and you not having them on your friend's list..

So like.. a bunch of your friends have person X and you don't, so he's 'closest' to your friends list. :P

It seems to figure "closeness" based on how many of your friends have someone on their respective friends lists who is not on your own list. As such, that's a fair indication that you should consider adding that person, and it's true that I've been aware of the top three it lists for me, [livejournal.com profile] volatilis_equus, [livejournal.com profile] canid_anubis, and [livejournal.com profile] shinigamigirl, as potential friends for some time. In fact, I remember volatilis from IRC, where he was often present but rarely had anything to say.

Most of the time I add folks either because they have been commenting in my entries, indicating that they are actually reading my journal, or because I notice that they've added me and looked at their own journal and found it interesting.

Yeah, somewhere on the site there's a description using an analogy involving buckets and water. It seemed to make some sort of sense when I read it.

I've also tried to keep my friend-list as short as reasonably possible, and almost all the real people on it are folks I've met in person. I ran my nick through TrustFlow a few days back, but initially put the results in a private entry. It's now public.

Heh. I've said this before I'm sure, but that userpic makes me smile every time I see it. Very handsome. ;)

Depending on how you've managed your friends list up to this point, this program will list a combination of the following:
1) people that you might want to consider adding to your friends list
2) people that you already know about that you've already decided that you don't want to add to your friends list

Some seem to have a lot of the latter picked by this program, and it makes them wonder. ;-)

Yes. In fact, I had figured that out from looking at my own results. A couple of the people who came out relatively high on the list are ones I had deliberately not friended even though many of my closest friends do list them.

Another way of looking at this thing, I think, is as the reverse of that meme that lists the largest cliques you belong to.

I find this whole thing interesting, in no small part because (as I indicated in my own post of it) my "closeness" numbers are much lower than most people's, which I conjecture is because my friends' friends list are more interrelated than most. Which is in itself interesting, and not something I would have been pareticularly conscious of had I not run it.

So: something ventured, something gained :) What value it has is yet to be determined, but it was something, at least.

Yep, I'd take that to mean that you have one or two well-defined cliques among your friends, and the names at the top of the list are members of those cliques whom you have not yet friended. Therefore they are friended by many of your friends, but not by you.

I did notice you had a couple of exceedingly low scores there. I went through a period of actively collecting such folks, so I didn't come up with any that "close" who weren't already friended by me.

Gah! I have cliques?!? Bleah!

Don't mind the above; it's mostly a holdover from my Jr. and High School days, where "clique" meant a rather unpleasant exclusivity into which I was never really invited (though in retrospect I can't say I'm too sorry).

I still need to go through the lower scores and see who (if any) I should friend. I don't want to overwhelm myself with stuff to read, though, so I've taken a rather procrastinatory attititude towards doing it :) I often end up reading at least some of their entries anyway based on their comments in my journal and some of my friends'.

Huh - LiveJournal really does form and/or reflect communities!

Sorry. I'm aware of that particular meaning of the word, and have experienced it myself. But no, that wasn't what I meant.

Merely the purely clinical meaning of the term: groups of mutual friends. You've seen that clique-counting meme, surely? It analyzes your f-list against those of all your friends, and finds the largest group(s) of which you are a member in which every member is friended to every other member.

My hypothesis is that if we were to run that meme, then add a couple of the "closest" from this meme and run the clique meme again (refreshing its buffer of course) it would find new, larger groups that would include the newly-added friends.

I know that's not what you meant; I was trying for humor, even if it was tinged with old baggage ;) The technical version is fine.

I haven't heard of the clique meme, though I'm sure a before and after would be interesting, particularly with the short-"distance" friends this particular meme uncovered.

Interesting how LiveJournal is doing a lot of community things, even inadvertently. It has certainly expanded my horizons - I have a horsey friend in the Midwest now! :D

Well, here's an example of the clique counter meme. I see it has been longer since I last ran it than I thought, so I'll probably give it a new run myself.
