Vacation day 2: Cleaning
Apr. 18th, 2006 06:33 pmI admit it, my desk was a total mess. The layers of paper and books went back almost a year by the time I got to the bottom of it. But once it was mostly cleared away, I could rearrange equipment. I got the monitor up onto one of those swinging arm things, which makes it possible to use the surface under it and over the keyboard (which is in a sliding drawer) as a place to put the drawing tablet. I have an old Summasketch II, so it is large and where to put it does pose a problem. I shifted the printer to make room for my second hand scanner, a Scanjet 5p that was formerly my mate's. He switched to a newer USB type scanner a year ago. Took the SCSI card (Adaptec 2920) from his retired PC and put it into mine to hook up the scanner.
Go Linux! It's all working. Configuring the Summasketch required me to go back and look at notes I made a while back with my old machine, but as soon as the right definitions were added to the Xwindows configuration, it works. For the scanner I had to first go to Adaptec's website because none of the Adaptec drivers recognized the SCSI host adaptor. The reason? They used a Future Domain chip in the 2920 instead of their own. The Future Domain driver is perfectly happy with it.
And the scanner itself? It just works. All I had to do was tell The GIMP where the xscanimage program was located and bingo, it scans perfectly. Everything just works. No fiddling with CDs from three different vendors, or downloading drivers and utilities.
And the desk? Still a mess, but not as bad. You can see patches of the desktop here and there. I'll be forced to keep it cleaner now, because I can't open the paper drawer of the printer if I stack a lot of junk on the desk. ;P
