Rain, rain, rain

Several brief but heavy downpours, probably still less than a half inch total. We do need the rain, but it makes working outdoors rather uncomfortable. I ran the sheep into the barn when one of these hit, and kept them there. Just as well. They lie in the mud and get filthy when it really rains.

An awful meeting this morning at the library consortium office in Rockford revealed that the people planning our migration to new software in just a year have NOT thought things through very well in their rush to meet deadlines. They messed something up so badly that they have to go back and redo it completely, and I believe that is going to wreck their schedule. No excuse, they have been warned several times about this particular point but chose to not hear the warnings. Idiots.

Once I got around to the RTFM part, my VMware installation is working at home with Windows 98SE as a guest OS at least as well as I could hope and perhaps better. Remains to be seen whether I can make it work properly with XP at the library. There I have XP on a real disk partition so I want to point VMware to that rather than use virtual disk files. Hopefully that will avoid any "activation" issues, since that copy of XP is already installed and running on that machine.

Hope the weather is going to brighten up for the long weekend ahead.

I was going to ask about your animals. Good that the sheep got
indoors. Hows the boys?

As for the library, well, did you point out that they should
have known about that shit? Sorry, I understand how it works,
you get all the responsibility and none of the authority.

The boys stay out in the rain even if I open the doors for them. They like it, running around in it and play-boxing or rolling in the puddles. Same for snow. Hail is about the only thing that will drive them indoors.

As for the library consortium, the migration committee was well warned about the thing they were leaving out, and deserve exactly what they are getting. The whole meeting was a waste of time and gasoline except that we got to make that point. The woman in charge of this is arrogant and a non-listener. She pretends to be listening to you but really ignores what you say.

Heh, just had to use Pon's long name for the subject.

I was caught in a very similar storm on my way home from work yesterday afternoon. Raining so hard I could barely see a thing, wipers on high and going slower and slower. Headlights on of course and concerned about other drivers. Of course a guy in a big new pick-em-up just had to blow by me up a hill and curve, double yellow line, Do Not Pass sign. And he had only been behind me for a minute or so. Must have been SuperMan. Or Damn Lucky Dude. I was hydroplaning as it was. Stupid people.

Just like you, as I pulled into the driveway, it was barely raining. Timing is everything. Grin.

I wish it would rain here, I haven't had some good wet weather driving for ages. It also saves my tyres when I try to learn how to control a skid in wet weather.

I also do that so I know the car's limits and handling characteristics when something sudden happens.

Oh, and I didn't know that was Stormy's full name. Cute one.

Our horses have dull registry names. Asher is Asher WKF, Archie is Augenstein WKF (I dunno why he isn't called Augie) and Tess is Contessa of Milk 'n' Honey (which is way too sweet sounding for her.)

My dog has the good official name, Wyndmist Simon Says Bounce. Even at ten, he's still pretty springy.

Storm's a Brewin'

Stormy, whom we call Pons, which I used to think was spelled Pones, is such a perfect, albeit little, horse. Shetland Ponys, a breed I never cared about one way or the other always thinking little girl pony stuff...

Well now I highly regard and respect this wonderful little horse (do not even prentend to dare they are not the smartes, biggest and most viable of all equines... ever). Giggle.

Of course, there are Shetlands and there are Shetlands. I am amazed the wide variety I see on line from very smart and sleek(body-wise-looking) show types to the Old World Shetland Islands type that Stormy is. So is Thunder, in spite both are a mix of Shetland and mini. It is obvious that this one of the oldest breeds of equines on Earth is so dominant in their genetic make-up it tends to over-ride any cross-matings that might happen.

In Stormy's case it was a matter of her and a mini, both rather forgotten thus neglected in a big field and, well you know how it goes. A horse has to do what a horse has to do and presto, Stormy, whom first Kurr and then Bear 'rescued' and is now the love of our lives in spite of herself.

Pons is tough and hearty and full of herself. So is her son, my stallion, Thunder. Both are instigators, both are strong survivors and both show a gentility and manner rare in horses. Such a blessing to be friends with her.
