Gary's cell phone arrived (a day before FedEx said it would) and we managed, with some stumbling around, to get it activated. It dials in and out, and does work right here in the house. Yay. I'm afraid it's going to take him a while to work out all the menus and commands, though...

The Escape, as I'd really expected, did not arrive today. The one they had their sites on for me got sold before they could sweet talk the other dealer into swapping with them. I had okayed a second color choice and they had one in that color not far away, but instead went farther to get my first choice color. The car is coming from East St. Louis and is supposed to arrive at the dealer right about now and be ready for me to pick up at 10 tomorrow. I'm not fond of auto buying, which is why I wait as long as possible to do it, but of course once the decision is made I'm as eager as anyone to get the new toy. Hopefully they are right and I'll have it tomorrow. The Cherokee is all cleaned out and ready to turn over. Found the title, the transfer paper for the alarm system, the extra keys, and all. (Which is kind of a miracle, since I bought it in 1997, and we moved after that, and still haven't ever unpacked and reorganized everything. I have several boxes of junk from my old office that have never found new homes. I think the instructions for the LoJack alarm are in one of them. Fortunately, the transfer papers were in the glove box. I've actually left the alarm disabled for about three years now. Out here, no one even locks their cars as a rule. When I lived in Chicago, it seemed like a good idea...

*snicker*

Yes, and he'll be talking on my nickel for a while. I linked it to my credit card, not his, because part of the gift was that I would pay for his first six months. There are two ways this could go that would lead to my getting one myself. If he hardly ever uses it, the total cost for six months will be about $30 which is worthwhile for the emergency capability and at that price, I'll go ahead and get one myself. If he uses it a whole lot, then it will cost so much that we might as well go with Sprint or something and get a family plan.

Otherwise, I'd probably never get one. ;p

Alarms are useless where I live as people ignore them now and people have had their cars still stolen with the alarm going off XD. Immobilisers are the thing here these days.

The weird thing here is that rego doesn't prove ownership of the car but really you'd be hard put to find anything which does as we don't get title o.O or a pink slip.

My brother's wife just bought a Honda Jazz, she picks it up on Saturday and she only signed the thingy yesterday.

The registration paper is critical for changing ownership here. You don't want to lose it.

An alarm by itself doesn't do much good here either, as they go off all the time and usually for nothing. LoJack does disable the starter if the alarm goes off and the right sequence of steps is not followed to reset it. It also has a locating function that can be used to find the vehicle if it has been stolen. They claim to have located them even in cargo boxes headed for the seaports. I wasn't particularly convinced, but the dealer offered a reasonable price for having it installed and my mate insisted on my doing it.
