Much of the day spent spinning. A couple of skeins of nice creamy white Leicester, and a skein of honey colored tussah silk. Also time putting a used spinning wheel back into working order, more or less. It was donated by a library user, used to belong to her mother, and she wanted it to go to someone who would use it. I don't need another wheel, but I'm sure I can find someone who needs it.
Farrier was expected this morning but rescheduled for Thursday.
Spent some time making a recording that may never see the light of day, but it was interesting.
No rain, in spite of predicted thunderstorms. And that's the news.

Date: 2006-08-23 04:24 pm (UTC)You got it almost right. The ducks engaged in their usual quacking contest in the morning, with the champion runner hen winning as usual on both volume and persistence.
The major head butting competition in the sheep enclosure these days is usually between Baa-baa-Louie and his own mother. I'm guessing it might be part of the weaning process or something, but they headbang each other with considerable force and persistence. Ouch.

Date: 2006-08-23 05:07 pm (UTC)I guess the little one needs to learn that skill, and it doesn't hurt them too much to butt heads. Either that, or it's a situation of no brain, no pain. (Not that your sheep are dumb, mind you.)

Date: 2006-08-23 05:25 pm (UTC)As for the head butting thing, yes, they are apparently built to take it. Very thick skulls, I imagine, and small brains that are well anchored and have some kind of shock absorber to keep them from getting the full brunt of the blows. When two adult males, even the wethers, get at it you can hear the "CRACK!" noises from inside the house sometimes. Watching it, I wonder sometimes that they don't get neck or spinal injuries. I guess it's all built to tolerate that kind of punishment though.
Sort of like watching a woodpecker chiseling away and wondering why he doesn't get a massive headache...

Date: 2006-08-24 01:37 am (UTC)Rear bearing broken off in the maiden, had to replace it with a piece of harness leather cut to shape, which is probably more durable than the original wood anyway. Double main drive band was missing, fabricated a new one. Mother-of-all was binding on the backbone, dismantled it to free it up where it was stuck, so that tension adjuster works normally. Still needs lubrication and some tightening up. I think I may shorten the footman a bit to improve the treadle action and keep it from hitting the floor.
