1) How long have you been spinning?
Since 1988, about 18 years.

2) Are you a beginner, novice, or experienced spinner?
I'd say intermediate or advanced intermediate.

3) Do you spin on a drop spindle or wheel, or both?
I much prefer the wheel. Drop spindles have never made sense to me.

4) What types and weights of drop spindles (or what type of spinning wheel(s) ) do you currently own?
  • Winsome Timbers (Lennox) Bonnie, double drive chair wheel
  • Ashford Joy, portable Scotch tension
  • Louet S10, flyer brake
  • Pirtle bulky spinner, flyer brake
  • Homemade double drive, antique Saxony copy (temporary custody)

5) What type of fibers have you spun with before?
Wool, linen, silk, wool/tencel blend, alpaca, dog hair.

6) What fibers do you prefer to spin with?
Wool is best, but linen is fascinating too.

7) What fibers do you dislike?
Tencel and most synthetics.

8) Do you prefer natural colored fibers, or handpainted/dyed fiber?
I like both, and even enjoy plain white or black.

9) Would you prefer all one type of roving or smaller amounts of different types to sample?
I think I'd prefer something that can come together as a project, so one or two types.

10) What are your favorite colors?
Blue, green, white, yellow.

11) What colors do you dislike?
Purple mostly.

12) What would you like to do with your handspun yarn, or what do you plan to do with it? (pattern clarification here)
I generally knit with handspun, small projects like socks, mittens, or hats. I like lace or textures more than color patterns like fair isle or intarsias.

13) What spinning projects are you currently working on?
Sample skeins for a show: silk, linen, Wensleydale wool. Knitted shawl from blue-faced Leicester.

14) Do you have a wishlist?
World peace would be nice.

15) What are your other favorite hobbies?
Aside from spinning, I take it. Writing, my horses, amateur radio.

16) Do you have any allergies (pet, smoke, food, fiber,etc...)?
Grass pollen, tobacco smoke.

17) What is your preferred shipping method (USPS, UPS, FedEx)?
US mail is generally easiest, but all will work.

(Responses for a project, probably of no interest to most readers.)

1. Actually no. You get used to it.

11. The trouble with purple is that it was a fad. For years, you'd go to a show or sale and everything there would be purple. I used to think purple was OK, but now I'm dead tired of it.

My sister is still infatuated with purple. (I think she does like "purple mostly," in fact.) But she found her limit when I showed her a two-page spread in the 2007 IKEA catalog that was a riot of different purple fabrics. Specifically it's this page, pages 232-233 of the catalog. (The link includes a Quicktime file of the catalog.)

And I had to go look at it. Fortunately I was able to look away from it quickly enough. ;p

Nah. That's not purple, it's lavender. :) When I say purple I mean that glaring color that the red hat ladies wear.

I'm still trying to figure out what the spindle loom is. I've never seen the term before you mentioned it.

ill get colty to take a pick fur ya. basically its a frame with 7- 2" dowels that ya wrap the yarn, or thread around. Then manually thread the pattern by hand. good fur scarves, shawls and belts, but i seee not much more. The dowels are only like 8" long.

Sounds like an inkle loom. A photo would help, yes. If it's an inkle, I do know how to use it, but don't have one any more, so sure, we'd be interested here.
