And the snow came...
Oct. 12th, 2006 09:59 amI knew it would when
vakkotaur reported he had snow in Minnesota. Just as I left the house to go to work, it hit us hard. Visibility dropped to about 50 feet during my 16 mile drive, with hard winds. There was some accumulation on grass, but the winds kept the roads clear. By the time I got to the library, it was just a light flurry. An hour later, the sun was shining.
But... I just happened to look at the radar map, and there was another green blob headed right at us. Sure enough, in less than a minute we went from sunlight to a total whiteout. Visibility was zero. That lasted ten minutes, now we're back to moderate snow with slight accumulation. I see more coming on the radar, though. Looks like a good day to stay indoors and put a fire in the woodstove. Glad I can go home at noon.

Date: 2006-10-12 06:02 pm (UTC)Oh well. I guess my first taste of winter just gets no more than a 1-day delay. :-)

I better start saving for those snow tires.

Date: 2006-10-12 07:47 pm (UTC)Doing the same thing here. Off and on, mostly on, blowing snow almost like a blizzard. Varies from mid twenties to mid thirties within minutes. Sun pops out with blue sky then s'more snow blowing flurries. Medium winds. Not nice.
Bear and I fixed wood stove pipe leaks (baseboard heating upstairs... when it works it works great) so house is comfywarm and snugglysealed (it IS a great house, insulation and no-cracks-wise). Just needs a total re-modelling but progress is being made, if not slow. Er, snow. Er, never mind.
Same thing driving in the dark this morning, doing 35mph because simply cannot see far enough to go faster safely. Of course a few blow by as though it was sunny and clear but they sometimes wind up killing themselves or somebody else so I just pull over far as I can and let 'em go. I think some fool, er folks, have good luck, plain and simple.

Date: 2006-10-12 08:49 pm (UTC)To me, it just sounds like nice snuggly-uppy weather. Maybe that's why so many unicorn foals are born eleven months after the coldest snows!

Date: 2006-10-12 10:06 pm (UTC)I like snow in general, but I'd rather let the tomatoes get ripe first. Until you get used to it again, doing farm chores in subfreezing weather is quite a burden, too.

Date: 2006-10-13 08:14 pm (UTC)I was wondering if you'd be interested in being on the "Hooves" panel again this year at MFF. I just found out that no one has signed up for it yet. So now I'm planning to do it, and I would appreciate your help. Please let me know!

Date: 2006-10-14 02:45 am (UTC)I know what you mean about a "different slant." This is why Dali and I are doing a definite shift from the former "Women in the Fandom" panel to "Incarnations of Mother Earth: Women's Spirituality". When it was about Fandom, there was more negativity. People whined, boasted, bitched, and pointed fingers. It wasn't all bad, but I can see there being much more positivity and profoundness when we shift it to spiritual focus.
That was odd that they suddenly switched the track that the "Hoof" panel fell under last year. I went and looked in last year's conbook to refresh my mind and saw that. You cleary described the panel as being about "spirituality" yet it was under the Fandom track. I know that they decided to do this for all species-specific panels, regardless of whether or not it had to do with spirituality. Even though the "Hoof" panel will again be in the Fandom track, I will open it for spiritual discussion. The track it's under will not affect my plans for it.
