...or a well-diggers ankle or maybe even a Republican's heart. Not expected to get up even to zero today. Schools closed. Bright, sunny, and bitter.

Things are fairly quiet here, which is just as well because we're also short staff (again.)

Yes, and that was Fahrenheit. For you Celsius folks, we're talking -20° or below for days on end. Normal for Winnipeg, but not for Illinois.

Yeah, I'd figured. ;) At least one of the folks at the filk con here this last weekend has just recently moved from Winnipeg to Toronto. Another was flying back to Detroit today, and expecting it to be cold when he arrived...

By comparison, I forgot to put a shirt on when I went outside today. Noticed after a couple of minutes. So far, five months in a row were record-breakers for heat.

By the time it gets here from Denmark, that warm air will have passed over Siberia or maybe the North Pole. Somehow I don't think it would help much. ;p

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] calydor has noted his imperviousness to cold in the past. Probably Viking bloodlines.

Over the last 20 years, actually, grapefruits have grown quite sweet here. Selective breeding I guess.

Maybe it was once, but no more. Today's red grapefruit from Texas especially are almost as sweet as the best oranges, and, in my opinion, tastier. I love 'em. (Much as I hate to say anything good about Texas...)

Of all possible choices. I'd exempt some Republicans from my slur, but not that one. Gerald Ford perhaps. Nelson Rockefeller. Dwight Eisenhower. But never Nixon, Reagan, or either of the Bush clan.

You know, I'm a registered Republican although I really consider that my identity, but I certainly don't have a cold heart. It is however fragile and can break the way ice does.

And if you want to play hard ball, if Republicans don't have a heart, then democrats don't have a brain. Reminds me of the quote that is commonly attributed to Winston Churchill: "If you're not a liberal when you're 25, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative by the time you're 35, you have no brain".

That's often quoted and misquoted so much that I'm no longer sure exactly what the original wording was. However, I totally disagree with it. I don't see how anyone who knows me could think that I am lacking either brain or heart.

I would put it another way. If you are a conservative, you lack breadth of vision; while liberals often lack long term perspective. Or, the conservative is narrow-minded; while the liberal is near-sighted.

I didn't say the Republican has no heart, only that it is a cold one. However, Dick Cheney's heart is nearly all mechanical. That's pretty damn cold. On the other hoof, I believe that Bush lacks a brain, as well you know.

I did not say or imply that you don't have a brain or a heart, Tivo and I think you know better than that. I was merely retaliating in a way that was fitting to your statement. I was trying to beat you at your own game, so to speak. I was trying to be a little witty and humerous, that's all.

I don't think one's political status automatically determines what kind of heart or what kind of mind they have. It's obviously silly to say liberals don't have brains and conservatives don't have hearts and believe that is supposed to be literal or even true in a generic sense.

And yes, having no heart is not the technically the same as having a cold heart but symbolically, they mean the same thing. When someone uses the term cold-hearted in normal vernacular it means the same thing as saying someone is heartless. They both mean cruelity, apathy, and lack of sympathy and feeling. There is no real difference in the meaning and usage, so you're just appealing to symantics when you make that argument :)

And you say Bush lacks a brain but yet you know virtually nothing about the man nor have you met him personally. Just because he isn't the best public speaker does not necessarily make him stupid. He's probably smarter than I am, so if he doesn't have a brain, then I must have a black hole in my head where nothing can exist because it is reduced to oblivion.

Cold hearted and heartless are not exactly the same. Its a matter of degree.

In my view, the cold hearted limit their concern, sympathy, and generosity only to those with whom they feel a close kinship or those to whom they feel a debt. This is indeed how I'd characterize the typical conservative/republican in the US. It often can be summed up in Marie Antoinette's famous (and callously ignorant) line, "Let them eat cake."

I judge Bush not only on his utter failure as a public speaker, but the shortsightedness and narrow perceptions revealed by his policies and actions. I also criticize his willingness to enforce his own religious morals on the entire population. That is a matter for individuals to decide, not for one man to determine for millions based on his own specific views.

You can't say I know nothing of the man. He's a public figure. He's been highly visible for years. I don't need to know his private life for this.
