Well, we haven't had a monsoon yet but that seems a possibility in the forecast for tomorrow. This afternoon at about 5 pm it was snowing so hard in Harvard that you couldn't see out the library windows at all. Twelve or so miles away they had sleet. Fifteen miles away it was a thunderstorm with heavy rain and violent lightning. Near there it was large hail. Leaving after closing time, we found our cars had a half inch of snow and sleet on all surfaces, overlaid by a thin crust of freezing rain. Gusty winds were blowing snow and sleet across the roads creating visibility hazards in some places, and drifts in others. I passed through two large areas of drifting on the way home where the snow/sleet on the road was five or six inches deep. Without warning, you suddenly encounter those. I didn't see anyone off the road in the ditch, but I'll bet some are there by now.

March comes in like a lion. Except the lions I know are much nicer than this one, and we already had our lamb for the year.

That is some crazy weather all right! If I didn't have to drive out in it, I think it would be cool just for the excitement factor since weather here is pretty mild most of the time. I hope you are staying safe and warm, horsie.

At the moment, yes. But there has been lightning and thunder since about 3 am, and the strikes are getting more frequent. In 30 minutes we have to go out and take care of the animals, and then I have to go to work. ;p

Librarianship!

Offtopic for this entry, I'm afraid:

I don't know if you read the author Neil Gaiman's blog, but he posted up an email that I reckon'll interest you.

My heart breaks for the people who had to go through that... idiocy. They're admirable.

I've been, briefly, indirectly and impersonally, on the receiving end of a similar semi-religious campaign (in short, I was dealing with a bunch of organised angry correspondence from readers/viewers calling the company I work for all sorts of nasty names) and even when you're being demonised corporately instead of personally, it's pretty life-sapping.

These things are all too common in the US now, and don't always turn out as well as that. Procter & Gamble gave up a 200 year old trademark drawing of the "man in the moon" after religious nutcases persistently targeted it as an "image of the devil". Many libraries have caved in to this sort of thing and removed perfectly good books from their shelves or made them so hard to find that they might as well have removed them. It isn't just so-called porn that is targeted, but classic literature (Mark Twain), scientific treatises (Darwin), books that even so much as hint at equal treatment for GLBT folks or, for that matter, women, and of course, anything that promotes a religious view other than that of the protesters.
