Sent home early
Mar. 2nd, 2007 03:44 pmDriving to work this morning was an adventure, to say the least. Even though the total snowfall last night was under two inches, the gale force winds were blowing it around to make drifts up to a foot deep over the road in places. As you approached an area where the wind was active, you were blinded by the blowing snow, literally. Like driving in heavy fog, I had to go really slow. Travel time was more than double the norm.
Got there to find that the schools were all closed. The boss comes from another direction, but she had actually gone off the road and managed to get back onto it by herself on the way in. As the morning progressed, we learned that there had been a multi-vehicle collision on one of the main routes into town (I wondered why five ambulances passed me in the other direction as I came into the city) and the police had closed that route. That was at 9 am, and they still had it barricaded at 2:30 pm when I went home. They were trying to discourage traffic on my only remaining route home and rightly so. It was worse than it had been coming in. I was at the tail of a line of cars following a snowplow. About an eighth of a mile behind the plow, and in some places the drifts were already three or four inches deep when I got to them.
Driveway is drifted badly here at the farm, but I got into it. Whether I can get out for groceries tomorrow is another question.
Oh, and the water is rising. Even though it is snowing and the temperature is below freezing, meltwater from the thaw earlier this week is entering our creek and raising the level. It's up to the banks now and the sump pump under the house is active every half hour or so, trying to add to the level.

Date: 2007-03-03 02:12 am (UTC)Warm is not a problem. Actually, I'm too warm at the moment. It's only 27 or so outside. Safe? Well, I have to go back into town tomorrow for groceries at least, but only to the nearest town (3 miles) not to the one I work in (16 miles.)
Snow Job
Date: 2007-03-03 06:00 am (UTC)Well... it was the same way here... windblown snow drifts. But I made it to work (same distance you drive) and back again no problems, although I did put off the running around after (bank, shopping for dog food, etc.) and was glad Bear made it home ok too.
Nice wood stove and electric blanket.

Not light enough yet to see if the water has gone higher.
