I got some vague notion that it has to do with the number of links to your blog from other blogs or other web sites. The more you are referenced by others, the higher your value.

Nah. I didn't have to show photos of myself in compromising positions to get the higher value. Actually, I was surprised myself. But there are others who must be worth a heckuva lot more than I am, if I understand what the meme does.
