Eep! It's working
May. 16th, 2007 10:10 pmDownloaded the MVS 3.8 operating system for the mainframe emulation, and installed it. After some false starts trying to remember how to IPL the system, I got it running. Sure enough, login prompts appeared on the terminals, the system printers began spewing job reports, and the console displayed the active tasks. I could log into TSO and execute commands. Response time was better than any S/370 I remember working on. Of course, there was only one user. But I'm still intrigued with the effort that has gone into this. You might not want to run your legacy banking software on it, but as a learning platform for Operating System design and configuration, or IBM console operations, it's a marvel.
I think even the most sophisticated users I ever knew would have a hard time telling it from a genuine mainframe if you just put them in front of a terminal or the console. Amazing job.

But no one suggested that mainframes were as huggable as ponies are.
