Went to Elgin this morning, returning just before noon through a heavy rain but only to find that it had hardly sprinkled here at home.

We used the day to read, resolve some minor nuisances involving the internet, and I made stir fry for dinner with rice, asparagus, broccoli, green pepper, carrots, onions, mushrooms, and a little chicken. Now I think we're going to watch a movie rather then sit at computer screens.

Oh, and one of the trees we thought might be dead is not. It is leafing out now and has a lot of pollen bearing flowers hanging from it too. It seems to be a hickory, perhaps a slightly different species or strain from most of the others on the property. The tree books suggest "pignut hickory" which is indeed found in this area and grows in the same mixed oak and hardwood environment.

To make up for that, I found another really dead tree. This one was an aspen way at the back property line. No problem with leaving it until it falls. At worst, it will just knock down a fence that is easily repaired. It's not as tall or heavy as the dead oaks in any case.
