Hay day and Flat bunnies
Jun. 12th, 2007 09:02 pmGot home from work and helped Gary stack the hay. Then we pushed the wagon back out of the barn so Jeff can pick it up at his leisure. You may remember that one load of hay last year had a flattened mouse and a flattened bird that went through the baler. This time one bale had a paw sticking out. I thought "Uh oh" and looked more closely. Something furry. Opening the bale and extracting the victim revealed a baby bunny, probably about two months old, quite flattened. Then I noticed a tiny tail sticking out of the bale in another spot. Yup, a sibling, equally flat. We decided not to use that bale, and not to open it all the way either. My guess is that there was a whole nest of baby rabbits that got scooped up into the baler. Flat bunnies aren't much fun, to paraphrase a bit.
Gary was really tired this morning and I think slept half the day. The reason? He was up most of the night worrying about his favorite cat. The cat went out the dog door just after dark, and then he saw the fox run across the yard. A few minutes later we started hearing weird noises (not really cat like, but...) and he just freaked. He was out in the woods with a flashlight looking for the stupid cat and absolutely certain that the fox (who doesn't even weigh as much as the cat) had killed and eaten it.
Said cat returned via the dog door at 4 am (I usually get up at 5 and feed the cats first thing) so Gary didn't really go to sleep until then. :\
Cat is completely unruffled. The foxes are still around, though. They have another burrow under a corner of the arena.
