Whee!

Oh noes! I got mentioned in Flayrah. Does that mean I really am a furry, with all that it entails? Well, it's incidental. But ROAR is available on Amazon now, and so is Ben's impressive novel, White Crusade.

Hot weather here. I nearly lost it this morning dealing with some jerk on the telephone. He called the library to bitch at us because we weren't open and he wanted to make a photocopy. He insisted that we used to be open on Thursday morning (we haven't, at least not in the past 20+ years that my boss has been director) and that we just decided to close to inconvenience him. I tried to explain that we had no staff to be open, no money for staff for those hours, and that the equipment was all turned off so I couldn't just let him in "to make one little copy." He grew even more belligerent and asked for my name so he could "report me to my supervisor." I told him to hold on and he could talk to the director, as she was standing right there. Of course he immediately hung up.

Workers were installing an automated door for the handicapped this morning at the front of the library. We used to have a bell to be rung for assistance, but it only got legitimately used about twice a year. It would, however, be rung a couple dozen times every day by kids who never learned that we would yell at them for doing it as soon as they came in the door. So now they will play with the button to make the door open again and again. I guarantee it, and it will let out the air conditioning in summer and let in the cold winds in winter.

It's hot. Everybody is wilted. Even I did some sweating while doing chores outside, in between swatting infernal mosquitoes. One of the horses has a persistent cough, which isn't good. He's had it before, and the vet says it's an allergy. It comes on at this time every year. She prescribed an antihistamine to be added to his food, which has helped in the past, but doesn't seem to be working this time. I think he missed this problem the last two summers because they were so dry, though. This year it's hot and humid.

Time to make supper for pooches, and something for myself. Then back to work at the loom or spinning wheel...

dealing with dumb customers like that is such a pain, ive had many run ins with them at the post office and i know how you feel.sometimes it must make you wish that you throw the biggest book at their head :P

Actually it just reminds me that I've always been opposed to tacking on "extra" services at the library: copying, faxing, general internet access (as opposed to specific library-oriented data,) and so forth. People who use those services expect us to give them top-notch priority because they pay something nominal while the normal library functions are "free." They become very demanding and pushy, and expect us to shove aside people who actually want to read books or do research. The worst, to my mind, is having a meeting room that is rented out for public use. Not only do they leave it a mess, with food all over the floor etc., but they then expect us to provide hotel type services. "Where's our coffee?" "Can you order in doughnuts for us?" "Could you send someone in to run the projector?"

Actually no one has said to my face that I can't be a furry, but I do often hear it implied when others try to define what a furry is. At the very least, I keep expecting someone to tell me I'm too old to be a furry.

It sort of parallels my repeated experiences years ago of being told I wasn't really gay because I didn't 1) sleep around or have one night stands; 2) go to gay clubs; or 3) take any drugs. That happened so often that I just keep expecting the same to happen in furry fandom somehow.

Yep, I admit it. Husky is cute. Saetto is something more than that, though he sometimes needs to get over the fact that he grew up in a "privileged" environment I think.

The phone makes it easy for some people to be rude and stupid because its not face to face. I growl at those kind when they hang up. They don't know and I feel better. None of us define being furry in the same way and its funny to see or hear how others see me as furry. When I first got into furry fandom it was "She really is a girl" then it was "she really is that old" and now its "Wheres your horse head. " I see myself as being horse from the wiast down. I don't do what most young furs do but I'm still a fur and so are you.
Mmms spinning wheel. Mine is collecting dust at the moment. Aw soon maybe I will dust it off and use it. At least its unpacked and not in a box like half my stuff is. I love hearing about your spinning and weaving.

I did buy that charkha, because it works really fast and is so tiny and portable. I'll write something about it soon with a photo or two.

I was spinning the rest of the cotton I needed for weft on the current weaving project this morning. Now I just have to ply the two strands together and finish up those towels. Should get them done this weekend, since it's too hot and humid to do much outdoors.

Yes, the telephone stuff is irritating. That guy was on his cell phone, calling from our parking lot. A typical, big-headed, self-important yuppie type. I wish he'd stayed on the line, because the big boss would have told him the same thing I did and then he could really go stew. People who never use or support the library system at all are the ones who get really bent out of shape when we don't bend over backward to serve them with extras, like photocopying, faxing, or computer access. The people who use libraries for the purpose they are intended to serve are usually the nicest and most appreciative you could ask for.

Amazing, usually in Oz they just tell you to get stuffed if you ring up to hassle XD I can't help feel guilty when I use a Pine River's shire library because they aren't run by the Brisbane City council and I live within the Brisbane city line.

Nah, that's OK. If you support your home library through tax or donation, you should feel free to use other libraries. We all cooperate and share with one another for just that reason.

Here in the US, things vary from state to state. Some states, like California, Michigan, and Minnesota, have what's called "universal library service." Libraries receive public funding apportioned by the state and based on the population and tax rates in their service area. So every citizen is entitled to use every library, and a library card from one is good at all. (Some individual libraries may opt themselves out of the system, but generally that's how it works.) In other states, libraries are a local thing. Illinois is like that. So every library has its own taxing district, and those who live in the district are entitled to use that library. If you live outside a library district, you get no service unless you "subscribe" to it and pay. It's hard to understand and makes a lot of people angry. Yet another reason for them to become belligerent and make threats over the counter...

Strange I can understand that system rather easily,
I do however come from one of the largest cities (area wise) in the world with a "single" council so everything is controlled by one entity so I'm used to blanket coverage.

I do also give the Pine rivers shire council library that I visit, all my good books when I tire of them, and all my cd cases :D They go through a lot of them.
