So we watched Conan the GovernorBarbarian this evening. Gary had never seen it, and happened to hear the sound track recording last week. He was intrigued enough to want to see the film. I think it's the best one Arnold ever made, mostly because he doesn't say much of anything and just poses a lot. ;p (Actually, I've always thought Gerry Lopez was much cuter. He played Conan's sidekick, Subotai the Archer.)

It's amazing how much the weather shifted today. We're down into the 50s now, but still wet. I was actually tempted to light the woodstove, but we settled for just shutting the windows.

I need to steal some of Asher's asthma medicine. Something is starting to really get me, and I usually don't have allergies in the fall. It must be mold spores. We've been so wet for weeks that the spore count is astronomical, not to mention the mosquito count.

Tomorrow, the Prairie Days Parade if the weather improves. I don't think we'll bother if it's pouring rain. There's a flash flood warning for the lower tier of Wisconsin counties right now. They've had five to six inches of rain in the last couple of hours. We were getting heavy rain just before sunset but it stopped.

Actually I thought the violence was overdone and often pointless. They did a fair job though of conflating several of Howard's stories into a single coherent plot. The sound track is very good, and was still done with a real orchestra instead of a stack of sythesizers. Scenery is fabulous.

Violence is almost always overdone in movies, especially the Governator's films. Explosions, gunfire, gore... rinse, lather, repeat. I agree about his uh, acting talents in film... I always liked the way the Terminator films showed his silent, serious side- where he spoke as little as possible, and each line had an effect because of it.

Well, yes. Violence sells tickets. Blowing stuff up sells tickets. It's an embarrassment to us all, in my opinion, but still it happens. In rare cases, I like a film in spite of the violence. I can't think of a single case where I actually liked the violence or even felt the depiction was essential to the story.

Yeah, not every car crash ends in explosion & immolation of one or more human beings.

I'm the same way with horror movies, too... the only time I think the gore was essential to the film was John Carpenter's version of "The Thing", as it showed- in fairly bizarre fashion- what such a creature was capable of. It's the only gorey film I've watched more than once and the only one that made a positive impression. I call it the exception to the rule.

Umm, you only make me glad I've never seen that one. Actually I don't see many films other than animated ones and that's a big reason.

It would probably give you nightmares... it's not for the faint of heart. I can't beleive somebody actually made a line of figurines based on the movie. Not something I find sane.

Sane? No. Profitable? In the US, probably. That's all there is to it, the unholy buck.

It's pretty squashy here, but not as flooded as last weekend. Had to swap in the spare sump pump this morning because the float activation switch on the old one was going erratic.

We're giving up on Clinton. They've had flood warnings up there all night and it continues for today. Even if the roads are clear, it's supposed to keep raining all day. I doubt many will actually show up for the parade.

I'll have to go look at those web cams in Union. We've only had about an inch and half since last night, at least right here.

Bareable? I can understand the urge to be bare in that heat down there, but don't get sunburned or bitten by bugs if you can help it. ;p

LOL Heh, well you'll probably get a chance to see the sunburn... it's basically become a permanent tan that's spread over most of my arms, face and shoulders. Amusingly, outdoor work is really beginning to turn me in a physically strong person; my upper torso's bulking up and my weight has not gotten above 182 since I was kicked out- though at least it's not way down at 170 like it was for awhile. My hair's getting more blonde in it as well, probably due to the sun. I tend to out ten or more hours a day.

Sounds good enough, though they tell us today that sunburn is really bad for your skin. Do protect your eyes from the sun, though. A cap with a visor, or sunglasses or something. May help prevent cataracts when you're older, and will definitely help prevent that wrinkly old cowboy look. ;p

I managed to get some transition lenses, but I've already gone through 2 hats since I moved. I keep losing them :P I'm not too worried about being a little leathery, but yeah I don't want to look like a crumpled paper bag :P

Transitions lenses are nice. I have them now. (I hate sunglasses with a passion, always have, and since I wear my glasses all the time I'm awake, swapping is too much bother. I do appreciate a visor to keep glare out of my eyes, though.

Paper bag... LOL. That's a good analogy, and no, you don't need it.

I've seen like ten old white guys whose necks look like crumpled bags. I've been around a lot of, uh, males, and I've never seen anything wrinklier. Never.
