Career meme: interesting results
Sep. 15th, 2007 07:00 amSnagged from
corelog and several others. OK, I resisted this one because it apparently involves making somewhat illegitimate use of a commercial site. However, after seeing some of the unusual options suggested for others, I finally decided to do it. Unlike some of the long lists of very similar choices, my results are very diverse:
11. Multimedia Developer (given how most of it is used, probably not)
12. Lighting Technician (tried briefly as an amateur, but it's a bit dull)
13. Costume Designer (I have an award for this, actually, for costumes I did for a production of The Lion in Winter)
14. Botanist (Interests me, but probably not as a career)
15. Critic (Oh right)
16. Comedian (No one thinks I'm funny)
17. GIS Specialist (Possibly, but this is what my mate wishes he had been)
18. Computer Animator (See "Cartoonist" above.)
19. Casting Director (I don't think so)
20. Communications Specialist (In a sense, this was part of almost every job I've ever had)
21. Writer (Working on it)
22. Artist (I wish)
23. Biologist (I once thought this, but my interests are too broad)
24. Graphic Designer (Jeez, art again?)
25. Exhibit Designer (Like for a museum? This I could do, and have enjoyed in the library setting.)
26. Print Journalist (Dabbled in the field, could probably do well at it)
27. Special Effects Technician (Hmph. Not likely. I prefer more substance.)
28. Composer (Tough job that requires some talent I think I lack)
29. Musician (Amateur yes, professional no.)
30. Taxidermist (Eewww!)
31. Market Research Analyst (Worked in the field, but wouldn't go back)
32. Medical Illustrator (This thing thinks I'm an actual artist, I swear)
33. Translator (Written yes. Live no.)
34. Veterinary Technician (Been there, done that.)
35. Industrial Designer (I think not)
36. Animal Breeder (The trouble is, then you have to worry about where all your "children" are going to end up)
37. Set Designer (Could be fun, I always enjoyed theatrical production)
38. Marine Biologist (Only if I started over from the beginning)
39. Political Aide (Even less likely than "Air Traffic Controller" or "Taxidermist")
40. Activist (Been there, done that.)
- 1. Website Designer
- I've done a fair amount of this one, but don't think I'd like a steady diet of it. Also, my preferences in this area are much more conservative and efficient than your typical website is today.
- 2. Desktop Publisher
- Ditto this one. It's a useful skill to have, but I'd get bored doing it all the time.
- 3. Technical Writer
- Worked professionally at this one for almost five years. It's an overworked, underpaid profession. I did belong to the STC, which was one of the more useless professional organizations I've ever joined.
- 4. Cartoonist / Comic Illustrator
- This is something my father could have done. I like to draw, but I'm not nearly fast enough at it for this.
- 5. Paleontologist
- Maybe in a different life. Archeologist would be a better match, I think.
- 6. Interior Designer
- I could do this, but I'd never fit into the profession or with most of the clients.
- 7. Animator
- See "Cartoonist" above.
- 8. Air Traffic Controller
- No. Just No. I dunno where this came from.
- 9. Cartographer
- This one I could do, especially with the aid of today's methods and equipment. My mate has a master's degree in geography, so I've had closeup exposure to some of it.
- 10. Film and TV Crew
- Technical skills I could handle, people skills that would drive me batty.
