Colors, sorta
Oct. 19th, 2007 09:09 pmIt was gray and gloomy all day, the winds persisted, and the temperatures were cool to raw depending on your exposure. But...
The belated autumn colors are appearing. If the wind and rain don't rip the leaves from the trees too soon, and we get some sun over the next few days, fall color is here. Several trees on our land turned overnight last night. The oaks are taking on the rusty pinkish red that they get in the best of years. The hickories are turning gold. The maples are unrepentantly green still, but a few have orange tips on their upper branches.
This weekend is the "Autumn Drive", an annual event in which a dozen or so places along our road open up to make a giant rubbish/art/crafts/junk sale and offer, in some cases, food, drink, and entertainment. The first couple of years we lived here, it was fun. Now it has grown to be a drag. Too many city folks blocking the road, parking all over (including across your driveway) and, yes, throwing trash on your grass. It started today and Gary says they were out in numbers despite the bad weather. The sun is supposed to come out for tomorrow and Sunday, so I'm not planning to do much this weekend but stay home and try to keep the horses and sheep safe.
