And it's not over yet. Gary doesn't get back from Chicago until tomorrow some time. I find I really dislike being here alone for more than a day at a time. That's a fairly new development, really. I mean, I miss him, and I have missed him whenever he's away, but in the past I've enjoyed solitude a lot more than I do now.

Sunday is the end of this year's gallery show in Woodstock, which means I have to go into town and help take down the show. I'm retrieving not only my own entries, but a friend's as well. Gary's mom is coming out from Chicago with him tomorrow so she gets a chance to see the show before it's dissolved. That means tomorrow we'll be doing that and probably having lunch there on the Square.

I'm supposed to dress up for Halloween at work this year. It was decided that everyone will do so. It should be a literary character. I have no idea what I'm going to do. Wearing my fursuit was expressly forbidden since I'm making an appearance at Family Reading Night later in the month and they're already putting out publicity for it. A cartoon showing various things happening at the library that night includes a saddled up horse in one corner with the words "Meet our special furry friend!" Uh oh. I guess I'll be competing with Suzy the African Lungfish.

Anyway, I'm really tired and have to be up early, so to bed with me.

I don't know how old you are, but I have to admit, after
having spent a lifetime dedicated to keeping my nose to
the grindstone, my ear to the ground, and my shoulder to
the wheel...I have become oddly whimpery about being
alone myself.

Heh. I'm 57 for a few more weeks. There are two obvious problems associated with it. I don't eat well or sleep well any more when left alone for too long. ;D

*goes on Ebay and finds an Eldercarebot(tm)*

You awake to its insistent beeping and a
robotic arm holding out a glass of juice.

You need an intolerable stable cat to make you wish you were on your own :D
And I know just the cat.

I know what to do with intolerable cats. There's always the water trough. No need to actually drown them, just toss them in and they take off for parts unknown, dripping wet.

Y'know, the list of advertisers that gmail displays with your messages is pretty funny:

Cat Ringtones
Free Cat Classifieds
Cat Trees on Sale Now (cats grow on trees?)
Free Cat Litter Box
PurrFect Scratching Post
Coffee Exposed (how'd that get in there?)
Modular Cat Furniture
Frontline Plus Cat (flea treatment)

And everyone needs modular cat furniture.

I think you mean they are cool. If they were hot they'd cook themselves. ;p

Dress up as a ghost ... No, hear me out. Dress up as a ghost, and STAY HOME. Then when they ask where the heck you were, explain that ghosts are invisible, which is why they didn't see you.

Mmmm-hmmm. And what literary character would that be? I can't think of a literary ghost who doesn't get seen at some point. ;p

Ooh, new idea. Dress up as GOD, post-apple. No one's actually SEEN him since Adam and Eve got kicked out of Eden.

Are you suggesting that I have a god complex? ;p

Nah, not my style. If I can find my academic robes from graduate school I may go as Dumbledore or Snape or something. I don't fit any of the famous detectives...

*chuckles* You know, I was just thinking the other day this must be a perfect time for furries to wear their suits out in public- too bad you have a conflict of interest. I have to ask, when you're in your fursuit during this occasion, do you let the kids ride you?

In dealing with little kids, I try to avoid physical contact as much as possible. I think the reasons are fairly obvious. I'm paranoid about the widespread belief that gay men are somehow natural child molesters, and I don't like to give anyone a chance to start making accusations. I will allow hugs but really, the only way I'm going to interact with kids at all is in a highly chaperoned situation.

Certainly no riding. There's a small but genuine risk of injury there, and neither I nor the library need lawsuits. I expect they are going to read one or more picture book stories with a horse in them, and I'll clown around behind the reader, pretending she doesn't know I'm there. Then if they try to turn the kids loose on me I'll get all bashful and hide behind something, peeking out at them until they back off a bit. ;p

With witnesses who sign in blood and formal notarization as far as I'm concerned. We have some very obnoxious parents in town, and this sort of thing has already come up. One threatened to sue us, for instance, because a photo was taken of his child while she was participating in a group activity. Apparently taking photos of children is somehow abusive and pornographic.

*Begins laughing hysterically* I'm sorry, I find the whole thing hilarious for some reason. I understand where you're coming from, of course, but sometimes human stupidity just cracks me up. I still can't stop laughing at the thought of you acting up in a horse costume- please tell me someone's caught you doing this on video :)

Nope, no videos, at least not yet.

I think it's the context in particular that cracks me up... I just picture kids climbing all over you for some reason. Somehow, judging by your pose, the suit... well, suites you :P
