It was a tough decision this morning. The weavers guild is meeting at this very minute, and a noted writer on the subject of weave structures is speaking to them. I have her latest book and would have liked to take it for her to sign for me. However, I have to work late tonight, which will limit my writing time. So... it was write or go to the meeting. The fact that I'd have to leave before the presentation was over in order to get to work settled it in the end. I stayed home and wrote. This story is coming more easily than last year's did. I'm using the word counter on FurRag for the moment, which is a bit on the generous side, but it's only coming in about 150 words higher than the count in OpenOffice, so I'd rather feel encouraged. I'm close to where I should be by midnight tonight, and may be able to get ahead before then. Though not too many people have said anything about it (perhaps a half dozen) the counters at FurRag claim that the unfinished story has already been perused by about 90 readers. I'm impressed, even if that count is as generous as the word count they give.

New chapter is here.

The counter is probably just recording hits on the story and not those who actually took the time to read it. I know I glanced at it but to be honest I did not read all that much.

Could be, but it records a separate total for each chapter. As I add a chapter, the count for that chapter runs up within 24 hours to a pretty close match with the previous chapters, so I'm convinced that a fair number of those people are in fact following the story.

Out of curiosity, I went and looked at the counters for the NaNo project of 2005, which was never completed. It's over 700 now, and that's on the last chapters, not just the start.

In contrast, the download counts for my podcasts have remained in the 100-200 range even after two years...

Shows you how much I pay attention. I am not even sure I knew you did podcasts. I think I have seen you talk about them but it is often one of those things that I just quickly glance over.

I don't do podcasts any more. The effort required to produce one is too large relative to the number of people it reaches. More people read one of my LJ postings than listen to a podcast, at least if it's one I put out.

It was an interesting thing to try though, and if someone asks what I sound like IRL, I can always point them at those and say "go listen."

Pods?!?!

Really? What's the link? Yeah, I'm curious :P

BTW, you now my comp status... and for some reason- when I went to check out your latest chapter- the library's filters blocked me... so who knows how long before I get to read more of it. *sighs* Still limited in so many ways >_>

FurRag does contain "adult material". I'll have to check and see if it is blocked here, but I don't think it is. Since the material is not visual, but only text, I think you have a reasonable case to ask that it be unblocked if it has been. I don't know about Florida, but here in Illinois the law states that libraries using filters must be able to suspend the filter for an adult user who requests that they do so, though they are not absolutely required to grant every request. If you find you are still blocked the next time you try, then it is quite reasonable to ask the librarian why the site is blocked and whether it really has to be.

I can't remember the direct link to the podcast archive off the top of my head, but you'll find a link to them in the left hand column, near the bottom of my Clydesdale Librarian pages.

Meh, that's blocked too. Stupid rules & regs... I can think of two options here, but I'll have to wait to exercise either one >>

There is no possible reason for the Clydesdale Librarian to be blocked. All it contains is a collection of book reviews. There is no offensive language, no graphical content, nothing. You certainly should feel you have a valid complaint there. If that's blocked, chances are the actual podcast site is blocked as well, but I'll look it up for you when I get home.

Thanks, Alt. These computers are... well, weird- yesteday I was viewing youtube videos on this thing and today something been done so that none show or play... the librarians tend to get a bit testy about one asking them to change their comp modifications.

Yeah, I do feel I have a complaint. But since I'm at the only library I can walk to, I'm a little more inclined to grumble and bare it, despite my dissatisfaction.

BCC libraries tend to let anything fly, but you've got to have a card... *sighs* I guess I know what I'll be applying for soon- again.

Wow... you have an awesome voice. It fits you very well, methinks. I listened to your #1 podcast and found it deeply intelligent and well-worth hearing. I only regret the world has done you enough disservices to limit the number of these, as well as the great difficulty those- like me- who find it hard to experience them. *Leans in and hugs you* Thank you, Altivo. Thank you very much :) I can assure you I shall be listening to more of them and sharing my thoughts.

Glad you found a way to listen and enjoyed it.

Try "My Resting Place," which isn't a Clydesdale Librarian podcast but is me reading one of my own short stories. I particularly like that one myself.

I haven't made any new ones in almost two years, but yes, I did a few. It was interesting but it's a lot of work.

*snickers* Don't start sounding like a fanboy. I'm just an old mangy horse, that's all.

*waves finger* None of that. I was being honest and genuine, not just a drooling mindless starry-eyed fanboi *rolls eyes*, but since I did sort of come off sounding that way- and you could be joking or modest- I can understand. Suddenly you reminded me of Takeshi Shimura in Seven Samurai, telling me, "you embarass me"... that gives me a good chuckle. I don't make assumptions of people based on age, and your mangy appearance is of no particular importance- to do so would limit myself as well as you... or others.

I listened to #2 today... I never knew that about Jack London.. being self-educated, I'm suddenly interested in reading his works. Having read Where the Red Fern Grows at an early age put me off reading about canines for sometime.

I'm glad you were willing to do that for people- sharing part of yourself, and of those who inspired you- like that. It's great stuff, Alt.

Jack London was a truly great journalist and author. The fact that most of his work is still readily available a hundred years later is pretty good evidence of that. I think you'd enjoy reading his stories and books.

It's a losing battle these days, but I'm still trying to get people to read. Once in a while someone actually discovers that it's worthwhile, and that there is more to literature than just manga. ;p

Oh.... *threatens to swat you* You're definitly what I'd call a "classic literature guy"- I've only met one other guy like you thusfar, but your breed are pretty cool in my opinion. Just remember- a battle worth fighting is no losing battle, no matter the outcome.
