Ice this morning, all the schools are closed in every town in the county and adjacent areas except for, you guessed it, Harvard. Which means I get to drive to work on this ice. [EDIT: 8:00 am - Schools announced they would be closed as of 7 am, call came from work at 7:30, we are closed. Weather service says more ice on the way, followed by sleet, then snow. I just put the closed message up on the library web site.]

Not a bad quiz, snitched from [livejournal.com profile] innerwolf:

Your Score: The Raven

You scored 32% domestic, 30% gregarious, 32% trickster, and 67% intellect!

Wild, Solitary, Serious and Intellectual: you are the Raven!

Raven is a strong symbol of both creation and destruction. Wisdom through intelligence, observation, and challenge. Raven is strongly tied to the spiritual world, living in a constant state of otherworldly awareness. Raven people tend to be very introspective and savor time spent ‘alone’.

This test categorized you based on four different axes of personality, which were then associated with a different animal. The four axes, as well as all possible results are explained below.

Wild/Domestic: This first axis categorizes you based on how much you are drawn to the outdoors, versus how much you are drawn to civilized situations. Domesticity has many shapes and forms, and varies from the joy of dolphins leaping next to a ship to the steadfast loyalty of a family dog.

Gregarious/Solitary: This axis measures how solitary you are. If you scored high, it means that you enjoy the company of other people, while a low score indicates that you prefer a more solitary lifestyle.

Trickster/Serious: This axis measures how well you line up with conventional trickster archetypes. People who fall into this archetype have a sense of humor and an excitable, highly chaotic streak. Scoring low doesn't mean that you don't have a sense of humor; it just means that you probably don't think dynamite is very funny.

Intellectual/Emotional: This last axis determines whether you are more emotional -- acting based on feelings and instinct, or rational and intelectual -- acting more on thought than on your gut feelings.

Probably because I'm not gregarious enough, and that may well be true.

That's just bad luck. The snow tends to avoid us here in Wakefield as well, while the Sheffield and the like are snowed under.

I live outside Marengo, 16 miles from Harvard. Schools here announced early that they would be closed. Harvard always waits and waits, but they finally have announced it officially. All closed today. Theoretically, that means the library will close, but I don't have word yet.

I have keys and the alarm codes. I can open. But I wouldn't do that by myself. It takes at least two of us to manage the place. However, it won't be necessary. The schools announced they would close as of 7 am, and so did the regional library headquarters in Rockford. My boss called at 7:30 to say we would be closed, which is cutting it darned close. I would have been on the road in another 15 minutes. Anyway, reprieved. The forecast is for falling temperatures and continued freezing rain much of the day. It will only get worse.

I had a weird dream about a pack of wolves once- I was a lone horse being chase by a pack of wolves. They seemed strong until I reared up and kicked one- then they ran acros the snow and inot the night...

That may well have signified something that was happening in your life at the time. In general, though, wolves probably don't prey on horses. Two reasons for that: their territories don't overlap, and only the young or weak would be likely to lose a race with a wolf-pack.

In RP, even when playing non-anthro normal quad forms, I found the wolves and horses were pretty compatible. As Farley Mowat tells us, and other researchers have corroborated, wolves live largely on small prey such as mice, voles, and the occasional rabbit or bird. An individual wolf can do quite well hunting small prey, where only a well coordinated pack can bring down the large animals like the caribou or musk ox.

I didn't click on that meme because the grid on the bottom makes it look pointless. Foxes are domestic and gregarious? If the author is clueless what's the point?

I didn't think it was that bad. You have to look at the author's definitions of those terms. By "Domestic" she doesn't mean "domesticated" but rather that these are animals who live easily around human/civilized areas, which foxes certainly do and do well. By "Gregarious" she means that they may live in small groups or larger herds or at least tolerate the company of other animals, which again foxes do to some extent, though less than some of the other animals listed.

So the wolf is gregarious because he lives in pack situations, but not domestic because he doesn't tolerate human habitations and activities well.

I agree with the above comment concerning gregariousness (gregariosity? I should probably check the dictionary to see what the correct word is), though, insofar as that the test itself doesn't really get that right. Wolves actually do not usually tolerate the company of other wolves who're not pack members all that well, and my answers indicated the same thing, for the most part - I deeply care about my friends, but I'm not usually all that happy (or even comfortable) in crowds of people I don't know.

One might also add that wolves can adapt to living near cities quite well. It's not as easy for them as it is for foxes, of course, both due to their size and the fact that they usually form packs, but lone wolves who live near cities and enter them at night are not unknown.

But of course, it's not as if one should take these things too serious, anyway. :)

Exactly. And an "archetype" is based on human perception of the animal as a symbol, more than on scientific observations of its behavior.

Even so, wolves are more gregarious than coyotes or weasels, who really do live as solitaries and hunt alone. The lone wolf is an exception, an outcast or misfit as a rule, and not typical.

Wild, Gregarious, Serious and Emotional: you are the Wolf!

Wolf people tend to revere individualism, but retain a predominant sense of family. Wolf represents all aspects of sociability, and the need for variety (in internal and external affairs) to remain healthy. Wolf is a strong symbol of loyalty and patience. Wolf medicine is deeply rooted in the importance of learning through teaching, new ideas, freedom of mind and body, and responsibility for self and others.

Virtually all horses have some amount of herd instinct. It's the usual stuff about protection, safety in numbers, and carries all the baggage about pecking orders and leadership. Individual horses may be more or less influenced by it, but that's what they mean by "gregarious" in this case I'm pretty sure.

Nevermore! Actually, we don't have ravens around here, only crows.
