So the official figures show we got 5 inches here, 6 inches at work. However, walking out in the pasture today I'd say there's more like 7 inches there. No new snowfall today.
Tess is supposed to get her feet wet occasionally for better hoof health. Walking in the snow is one way. Since there's nothing to eat out there now and she'd get bored in a hurry, I took a flake of hay out and tossed it on the snow. Then I went back in and got her. The snow didn't seem to bother her, she was eager to get out there. Then we arrived and she looked around and looked at me as if to say "Where's the grass?" But she spotted the hay so that was OK, for a while. I shut the gate and went back to muck stalls, thinking I'd do both barns and then go bring her back in.
I finished the arena and sheep pen and was headed for the boys' barn when I heard Tess whinnying out back. Fortunately her stall was all set for her. She was running back and forth at the barnward end of the pasture, hollering for me to come get her. Like a kid having a panic attack, she finished the hay and realized she was all alone out there and it was gloomy and all black and white and scary I guess. So we waded through the snow and back to her stall, where she was quite pleased to be.
Oddly, then when I finished with the boys' stalls and put down their hay and grain for them, I opened the door to let Asher in and he wouldn't go. He stood there looking in through the door, sniffing and shaking his head. Sometimes he does that, I don't know why. Finally I had to go in first to show him that it was OK and he followed right behind me as if he hadn't been standing around for five minutes afraid to go in even though he could see and smell the food. Of course once Asher was in and crunching on his hay, Archie had no problem going in himself.
I've always said I didn't want children, yet there it is. I have them anyway.

Date: 2007-12-30 08:47 am (UTC)Horses are so funny and, yes, much like having children. They can be very vocal and expressive. Selene is our most talkative and she lets us know when it is time to eat or if she wants her stallion, Thunder, in no uncertain terms. Tonka has a very softgentle nicker when he wants some hays and, of course, the exchanges between Thunder and Selene can be loud and demanding when they are in the mood, so to speak. Mostly in the Spring and Summertime.
Chey almost never says anything, and Stormy, rarely. But Stormy has about the most overall personality of them all. She is the one to get the wind in her ears and out her tail and gallops and tosses and whirls like a goofball while the other girls either watch as though she is crazy (which, of course, she is) or join her almost as though they have no choice. Fun to watch the three gallop together.
Got about the same amount of snow here, maybe a bit less. Sparse grazing but they still hoofpaw the snow and graze rather than eat hay only. The boys hardly touch theirs but both are FAT so are gonna be ok.
I am looking forward to photos of me, in full Steed fursuit, with Tonka, both standing on the ground and mounted. And on my motorcycle in biker garb. Fun stuff.
Love ya and wishing you a Merry New Year.
