Vacations!
Apr. 7th, 2008 10:55 pmSo... the fiscal year ends April 30 and guess who hasn't used up his vacation time again. I'll be darned if I lose any days this time, I don't get paid enough for that. Therefore, I'm taking every Thursday off up to and including May 1. And I still have to find five more days to take off in there somewhere. I shall, too.
Spinning the blend of wool with dog hair that I mentioned earlier. I think I like the horsehair better, but it's turning out quite nice looking just the same. The sheepdog (bearded collie, actually) is gray and white, and the sheep's wool is white. It's making a very nice heather effect and spinning down quite fine. I'll be plying it but expect to get just fingering weight yarn. Have to think about what to make with that.
For those of you who are attending Midwest Furfest and are fursuiters, they've just added a page to the website where you can request that your room reservation be assigned to the "fursuit floors" (3, 4, and 5.) See
duncandahusky's LJ for details and link. I trundled over there and put myself on the request list. I've been thinking about all those floors and broken elevators with more than a little dread. Since all three of us in the room are fursuiters, we can legitimately ask to be put on the lower floors.
And now, to bed...

Date: 2008-04-08 12:04 pm (UTC)The library is open 52.5 hours a week. We have four full time staff, one who works about 16 hours a week, and three who generally work 12 hours or less. We need a minimum of three staff at the busiest hours (Friday, plus the other weekday afternoons) and a minimum of two (one of whom should be a full timer) at all other times. So as you can see, we're spread pretty thin even when no one is out sick or on vacation. Like everything, it's all limited by available funding. We get complaints about not being open enough hours, but generally from people who would never vote us any more funds to cover the cost of increasing our availability. Actually, I've been tacitly relieved of having to cover the public desk except for brief periods now (and Wednesday night) so I'm getting some concessions there. I don't mind doing real reference, but we rarely get that. Mostly it ends up being petty computer questions and "Where are the tax forms?"
Not that I really wish to be back at the college library, which had other problems, but there we had a staff of 14 full time librarians plus numerous full and part time assistants. And because I was the systems person as well as a cataloger and reference librarian, I was not required to work an evening shift. In fact, rather miraculously, in seven years I was never asked even to substitute for anyone on an evening or a weekend.

Date: 2008-04-09 11:02 am (UTC)Genuinely shaggy sweaters can be made, of course (and would be extremely warm.) The technique for doing so would involve processes during the knitting or weaving of the fabric, though. Yarn with long shags tends to lose them while being worked up.

I still don't think I have enough seniority to make it to MFF,
though, this year, I might steal a few days and just sit at the
bar and invite a bunch of fursuiters over for a group pose/hug/pic.
*puts it on the web as one fursuiter is trying to mount him and his
political career is...just beginning...*
